Maybe if someone did that, he'd also refresh his obtuse attitude...

But seriously, is anyone really surprised that none of the elected reps are taking this seriously? This is status quo...much to the same degree as photo-radar. This is the same MO, IMO!

It's just a matter of time before the burden is publicly shifted to the taxpayer.

You want a roof? Well, how much extra are you willing to cough up?

This sounds/feels more and more like buying a car from dealership...how badly do you want it!! lol

From what I've read in the newspapers:

They're putting the stadium in a residential area. It'll be used for rock concerts, etc. There will be noise issues, and the local residents and councillers know it.

The canopy/roof was advertised as a way to block the noise and keep the neighborhood quiet.

Now that the stadium is approved, they're dropping the canopy/roof from the design.

Any competant councillor would added a simple condition to the approval: If the noise abatement systems are dropped, then so is the approval for construction.

MEH! on the noise.. big time MEH!

At the current stadium I live 6km away and I can still hear the really good concerts. So even with a freakin dome anyone within 1km is still going to be "annoyed", never mind how much good the "canopy" will do.

I still agree that dropping the canopy is not an option, just dont really believe that anyone in their right mind would think it would do much of anything for noise.

It's a ploy to get taxpayers to foot the bill, pure and simple. Some (like me) who are really suspicious of this deal from the beginning have been waiting to see this card played.

And now it has.

Time to see what anyone's (eg: citizens rise up, demand answers and hold elected officials accountable, or, gasp, an elected official takes a stand and calls a spade a spade) going to do about it. My guess....probably nothing.

Somehow the stadium will be built, it won't be what was promised. Maybe it'll be built with the intention of putting a roof on "at a later date" (re: later, still with taxpayer funds tho) to get this issue put to bed long enough for the stadium to be built and Asper to get his "free land" at Polo Park and a football "toy" to play wtih.

The problem with this is that MAYBE, JUST MAYBE something might happen that causes this whole deal to be held off until after the current civic election. And the new city council after that, actually holds this project accountable. They cant cancel it outright if nothing changes at this point but they could deny any changes to it. But the likelihood of a decision being sent to the new council is remote. The current council will get to decide on any changes, they will probably support them and a new council will be left to deal with the insaneness caused.

I think at this point most people are simply saying.. Tell ASPER and CRESWIN to F Off. Have the city and province and feds get this done properly without his involvement. Hell maybe we should "buy" the team from the board just like Asper was going to do. At least then we can toss this inept board for one that is accountable to the public.

At this point Asper and Creswin have suggested they are about $25 million short. They should not be allowed to proceed because of that shortfall. I believe sammy has already suggested that any changes from the original proposal will not be approved by the city.

What's more curious is the complete silence of Selinger and his hood...

BTW the noise thing is a complete red herring. Nobody in their right mind would have believed the "sails" originally proposed for the roof would have had one iota of impact on noise abatement.

This is a big enough issue in that area for someone to come along, say the correct words, and get 'shooed-in'.

eh.. the ward is fairly large and enough people in the area wont be directly impacted by it so being a one issue runner would get you maybe 1000 votes.

Swandel hasn't been around long enough to secure a inevitable position yet, and don't forget, most politicians are voted out.

This gives the ones that are dissatisfied with Swandel a place to park their vote. Just speculating....

seems the florida marlins are having fun with a stadium right now

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=jp-marlinsfinancials082410

I love this quote.

“It’s not that teams need new stadiums, either,” said Neil deMause, whose book “Field of Schemes”
blew the lid off ballpark boondoggles. “They need new revenues. It’s
really just a bailout. It would be cheaper to just give the teams the
money. But then it would just look like a handout. The stadiums have
become part of the business model for teams.”

Perhaps our swindlers are not as good as their swindlers? I mean $2.4 BILLION vs. $140 million? Pfffft. Minor league graft.

Why don't these team owners (employers) who "need" more revenue just treat the team like they treat all their other businesses?
IE: Tell their players (employees) to take a pay cut or they will shut the business down or bring in cheaper players (employees).

You HAD to see that coming. As soon as the Quebec City arena became a political potatoe this became an obvious add-on.

There was no way the feds would say no to this because it's Quebec. That means they are backed into a corner. Now watch the Winnipeg stadium expand in scope. And watch MTS centre demand funds to support their arena preparations for entry into the NHL. This almost guarantees Regina gets their domed stadium too.

Lets complete the Stadium, on our own.. no David Asper.

and GIVE the current stadium land to the first developer who will build a massive indoor water park publically accessible. The caveat being the water park must have the same footprint as the playing field and entire south end zone. Taxes will be waived on the water park portion of whatever they build ONLY... with the comparable cost of taxes being given out in free water park passes to the city for use in whatever manner they choose.

good deal no?

They get the rest to develop into whatever they want.

How many people will take the stadium even for free? They'd pretty much have to give it to the Bombers, otherwise the team is fricked.
