Classic scam:

It was his father, Izzy Asper, who taught David the art of the deal.

So I shared a story with David that a former Winnipeg Jets managing partner once shared with me about Izzy.

It happened when Barry Shenkarow and his partners were trying to get the Jets into the National Hockey League, and they either needed a new building or a remodelled old Winnipeg Arena.
Shenkarow was in Detroit making a presentation to the NHL board of governors about renovating the old building.
Meanwhile, then-Winnipeg mayor Bob Steen was faxing the board telling them the city was going to build a new arena at The Forks.

The board wanted to know what was going on. Shenkarow could only think of one person who knew what to tell the board. He called Izzy.

"Tell them anything you want," Izzy said. "Once you're in, do whatever you want.'"

So...when are we allowed to hit the abort button on this scheme?

Maybe it's not too late to re-name some street or park after Uncle Leo, so as to get on his good side once again...that's probably our best case scenario of getting out of this, assuming the general public isn't ok with David's well played scam and isn't ok with him getting away with it.

"
Mayor Sam Katz says if a new football stadium comes in over budget it’s up to the private sector to pay for the extra costs.

"The private sector is responsible for cost overruns," Katz said today."

That being said, Asker has said he will build it for $115M.

Seemsd like cost over-runs will deminish the quality...however, we've only seem a couple of pretty drawings so far, so quality cannot be judged.

The BIG QUESTION remains:

How long will these mofos continue to think we're bamboozelled and believe this is anything but a mess?

Mr Nobody has one of the best ideas for a stadium I have ever come across.

It's a good idea. Will Winnipeggers buy into it? Pun sorta' intended?

BTW Don't say MrNobody and best idea in the same sentence... Smile

Selling the seats is a good idea?

Imo it's absurd.

They know that we know this is a mess, but they don't care. Look at the other big Asper mess. It's just business as usual, no one will get this stadium project stopped or changed. Be sure to vote these jerks out of power.

more or less absurd then "loaning" a businessman 90 million dollars to purchase a team worth 10 million?

I just received this email:

______________________________________

You are invited to a Town Hall Meeting.

This is your opportunity to hear an update from community members who have been closely following the plans for the stadium at the University of Manitoba.

You will hear about how the developer is now trying to build a different stadium than what was originally promised the city, the bomber fans, and this community. The artist’s rendering of the stadium on the corner of Chancellor Matheson and University Crescent shows a futuristic closed-in design that promised to keep the noise from stadium events in the stadium.

But the latest version is nothing like this: you can clearly see the bleachers and the fans which means that if you can see them, you can hear them.

How are you going to enjoy an evening in your home with 33,000 or more screaming fans yelling in your back yard?

Plus there has yet to be any realistic plans put forward in regards to parking for the 9,000 to 13,000 cars that will converge on our community and the significant negative impacts this will have on area residents (blocked and over-crowded streets, restricted access to emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and ambulances, and lack of parking for residents and their family and guests to name a few).

The developer claims they can build a stadium in 2 years, but they could not produce a traffic study during this same time.

Your hard-earned tax dollars are ultimately going to be paying for this project. You can also likely look forward to higher property taxes and road improvement levies that will become necessary with all the extra traffic flooding our community and putting additional stress on our already crumbling streets.

So you have to ask yourself: Do you really want a stadium in your neighbourhood? David Asper thinks you do. So do Mayor Sam Katz and Councillor Justin Swandel. Now is your opportunity to be heard and to finally tell these people what you think.

We have invited Premier Selinger, Mayor Katz, Councillor Swandel, Councillor Steeves, Councillor Vandal, Marilyn Brick, MLA, Kerri Irvin-Ross, MLA, Dr. David Barnard, David Asper, Louise May, Terry Duguid and Hugh McFadyen.

This is YOUR community that is being affected and your voice needs to be heard! Please take the time to attend the Town Hall Meeting at the Richmond Kings Community Centre on Monday, August 23rd at 7:30pm.

Sincerely,

Catherine Addision
Fort Richmond Coalition

The canopy that was supposed to cover 80 per cent of the stands at the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' new stadium is the only design component that could be dropped when the final cost of the stadium becomes clear next month.

But that potential change project developer Creswin Properties says is being considered would be significant enough to lead area councillor Justin Swandel and likely others on city council to vote against a revised stadium design, should it come to a vote in late September.

This is what I call "managing expectations". The developer will come up short when the bids come in and they want to reduce the impact then by announcing it now.

I say the city/province and the Blue Bombers MUST reevaluate this whole matter before one more shovel enters the ground.

oh gee...didn't see this coming miles away...

I'd rather have the old POS stadium refurbished than a half built, albatross at the UofM.

Maybe we should just build a roof for the old stadium instead.

This should likely be merged with the existing new stadium thread, so as to not clutter up the board with same topic threads.

Just a suggestion.

Residents of the area have a meeting setup for tonight at one of the local CCs. So far it appears all the currently elected politicians have refused to go.

I think one of the local residents should take a serious run at the incumbents seat in Fort Garry. I think it is currently held by Mr. Swandel.
Maybe that would make him sit up and take notice.
