More Potential New Stadium Problems

1. Is anyone aware of any other CFL city which employs school buses to get fans to and from games?

2. Do fans in other CFL cities get free bus transportation to and from the games?

when you FORCE a plan through and lie about the plan.. details like this tend to get missed.

Funny, as I had come up with my own solution over a year ago . Though be it, small scale.

What a scam!!

Now they are saying that the 7,100 stalls that they do have are within a 30 minute walk of the stadium and include big box parking stalls which are private.

So how many stalls do they really have? ....a couple of thosand perhaps....to service 30,000 people....good luck with that.

Parking Services is responsible for overseeing over 6,000 parking spaces within the 274 hectare Fort Garry campus...

By a show of hands, who did not know that the U of M had 6,000 spaces? This is not some sudden revelation that the powers that be, and anyone with access to the internet, did not know.

So lets can the drama and figure out what this really means.

1) car pooling
2) transit (regular runs and special runs, park 'n rides, etc.)
3) local establishments (such as the stupid store) selling parking just like every single business within a 10-15 minute walk from the existing stadium does.
4) shuttles from bars and restaurants around the city
5) provide lots of bike racks

Why is it everyone and their dog will advocate for urbanites to get out of their cars and find alternate methods of transportation yet when forced to here it's a big deal?

Even I have conceded I may have to bus it to games and I have not taken public transit since a 1990 subway ride to a Blue Jays game...

problem being we dont own enough buses to service 31K people.. AND still maintain service in winnipeg.

Add to that the fact that.. WHO pays for that extra bus service?

We don't have to service 31k (actually 33k). Assume the 6,000 spots have more than one passenger. Let's say two. That's 12k. I know I often car pool to Bomber games today with 2-4 peeps.

Parking at local businesses and other methods? Can we assume another 12k?

That leaves maybe 10k that might have to bus it. If our transit system can not accommodate 10k every once in a while we is in trouble.

And don't forget there will be BRT...

There are only 21,000 season ticket holders divide by 4 = 4000 stalls needed.
Regarding the walk-ups, so they will have to walk a little farther!

Outsider- thank you for the suggestion ,but my walking limit is only at 300 yards today, but with my regularly planned exercising should improve! lol

I did not know it was "free".
I thought people were actually paying their own way.
(When I rode the bus it was not free.)

What I think is ridiculous is that they are blocking off and not letting people park on the residential streets near by.

I used to live a few blocks from the stadium and my street along with many others filled with parked cars on game day, it didn't bother me though. There is only 11 or so home games a year not like it's happening a few times a week or something. Stupid NIMBYS.

bus service is not free. someone pays for it... someone will know be paying about 10 times more.

12000/60 people per bus = 200 buses. we only have 540 buses and during peak hours almost every single one is in service.

having 20 extra drivers and buses that we have no is nothing. a simple thing to schedule. 200 extra drivers? not that easy. Also... where are you going to get 200 extra buses at rush hour for the weekday games? Those buses are already being used in other areas of the city. Logistically its a very scary nightmare.

200 EXTRA BUSES AND DRIVERS.... I am assuming that in the current stadium the bombers get a cut of most of the parking lots around the place? Even if they dont .. having to pay for 180 more buses is going to eat in quite badly on the budget, never mind if they are losing money because of the loss of parking revenue.

Now what about all these cops that will be stationed on all the local streets stopping people from parking there. Those cops free too?


This is a crazy thing that should have been reviewed properly long before shovel one went in the dirt.

That foot bridge into St Vital to access the university is starting to really look like a damn good idea.

And they think 10,000 will be willing to take the bus to the game at the new stadium.
Is that realistic?
I suspect many people will just say the heck with it and stay at home to watch it on TV.
Especially if they are coming from the Kildonans, Transcona, or Westwood

People will figure out a way to get to the stadium. McMahon Stadium in Calgary has only 1500 parking spots. Only the "red zone" season ticket holders can get parking spots and even then there is a waiting list.

Only in Winnipeg would the biggest issue be parking for next to almost every thing built here.

It isn't that hard to take the bus and I suspect that there will be park n rides set up throughout the city until the BRT is built all the way to the U of M.

Another typical Winnipeg thing... incessantly complaining about change until they get used to it after a few weeks.

I am considering it and I hate taking the bus. Ditto to Jets games downtown.

Winnipeggers have been quite spoilt for a long time now. We do need to consider using mass transit. Now the Transit folks need to step up and improve the service as noted in the sandbox many times.
