I don't get that either. My Dad was telling me how his family among others helped to build the Broadway Community Centre..his Mom did fundraising and the whole community was involved. I don't see that kind of community involvement anymore. People tend to keep to themselves, I know I am somewhat guilty of it. I am better now but before having kids I had no desire to get to now my neighbours.

Not following J2F. Population of Winnipeg in 1950 was what? 250k? Pretty sure they earned a lot less in those days too.

You can't blame the "public" entirely.

Because of all the new laws, regulations, codes, unions...all of these have attributed to creating an environment which discourages community involvement.

There was a time when, if you wanted a house built...four or five friends would get together and build it. Try doing that today...even if you own the property and have the permits required. You still have to deal with inspectors, taxes, codes which deter it all. You'd also have a neighbour complaining that you're making too much noise, or that you're building something they don't want to see.

For what it's worth, there may be sprawl issues in Winnipeg, but they are no where near as bad as in places like Calgary; be thankful Winnipeg isn't like Calgary in that regard!

Way too much government involvement. Micromanagement at its best!

I have never professed to being a math wiz, but 250k does not equal 700k, or does it?

Nope. 250 isn't 700.

Who says the population of Winnipeg was 250K in 1950?

Well, I am trusting that GOM got his figure from a reliable source; he wouldn't go around making stuff up, IMO.

Well, if he did, he was damn close:

http://winnipegtimemachine.blogspot.com/2007/02/winnipeg-floodway.html

According to this, Winnipeg's population in 1950 was approximately 250,000; well, slightly over.

WTF? Why not simply ask before making such an asinine comment?

Yet you feel free to suggest numbers about roads and schools and community clubs. No ignorant comment was made when challenging you. Sometimes J2F you can be an ass.

Absolutely correct. Canadian cities are really experiencing increases in crime.

I already told you that here, drug dealers used 5 year old kids to push their drugs. Well now they went back to doing it themselves in downtown squares, mainly because the young kids couldn't count the money...
Crime is a global problem, but I guess, everyone thought it wouldn't have affected Canada as it has the rest of the world.
There are many factors involved. One major problem in youths today is the lack of responsability, respect, and common sense.
You also had a better perspective in life, as the more you worked, the more you earned, and the better you lived. Now, you can work your *ss off, and gain very little more... No wonder many peeps have fallen behind or are falling behind. There's no incentive to go out and do your best.

so just to be clear you are placing the downfall of society squarely on the shoulders of workers unions?

Especially Calgary....already a few murders in 2009! They've beaten Winnipeg.
