Because your "tongue-in-cheek" comment in the Forks thread was to here...I'm responding here.

Your reference to the soccer-pitch and one person stopping it is out of context.

If the autodealer owned property NEXT to the BRT, and was just crying because he felt it would hurt his business, or deter customers...I'd say "screw him"...the BRT or LRT is a good idea and benefits more than one person/business. Some compensation might be in order to relocate access or signage...but nothing more.

The problem I have here is as stated before...it is the government coming in and STEALING property. Property that is legally owned. And I mean STEALING in the ultimate sense. And in an extreme sense...conquering...as if he squatted on the property and refused to leave...they would send in armed personnel to remove him.

heh.. taken from an article about the stadium Smile

"
Syrota is right: The City of Winnipeg's expropriation powers are broad. The city can take land for residential, recreational, commercial or industrial development.
In the past, it has expropriated land for The Forks, Red River College's downtown campus, Thunderbird House and the Kenaston underpass"

I see no links or reference to expropriated land for The Forks, Red River College's downtown campus, Thunderbird House and the Kenaston underpass. Let's assume that it happened. Who owns The Forks, Red River College's downtown campus, Thunderbird House and the Kenaston underpass? Are they not provincial or federal properties? Did the city expropriate the land?

The city was for sure the ones involved in the expropriation for the Red river campus. The others I have no idea on.

a quick search of the council minutes turns up the kenaston project.
http://winnipeg.ca/CLKDMIS/ViewDoc.asp?DocId=8844&SectionId=212958&InitUrl=/CLKDMIS/Documents/fi/2008/m8844/05.%20%20kenaston%20undrpss%20f%20status%20report%20no%20%207.pdf

then there is this little gem about 109 pioneer avenue
Council concurred in the recommendation of the Executive Policy Committee and
following:
1. That the City Solicitor/Manager of Legal Services be authorized to settle the
remaining claim in the amount of $739,983.00 for due compensation for the
expropriation of 109 Pioneer Avenue and parking area, shown as “Land Expropriated
By-law No. 4729/87” on Misc. Plan Number CCFR 6962, at a sum of $425,000.00
interest, 50% of said costs to be funded by the Province of Manitoba.

There are 250 hits on the word expropriation on the city meeting search.. (of which it seem 200 or so) have them go in camera

and that is just from now back to 2007ish... the search only returns the first 250 hits

You mean the ones across from the city hall , you may be right I remeber something about a fight over there value and either fix or lose them . Check Heritage buildings as they were classified as such I believe

It's 9:40 PM here. Is it still too early to get stoned drunk? Or could I just ooze and booze my way into 2009?

Part of this cities problem has been trying to be bigger for to long instead of better.

The original planner was a brain though, those WIDE city streets make it easier to drive home drunk after a party at friend's place.

A city will also never prosper if NIMBY's stonewall every project and city council has no vision or ambition to better the city and bring it into the 21st century. By common sense definition.

So, let me get this straight; are you suggesting that because things were more "beautiful, peaceful, and safe, back in the sixties", that means a city shouldn't change and adapt with the times? You sound like someone on Winnipeg City Council.

I really hope you are being sarcastic Shocked

Nah, he was stating a fact. What was it about the 50's and 60's that we were able to afford new roads and community clubs and schools. But not today? Look at all the angst when someone mentions we need a new school? Or we can't afford our community centres.

Ten times the number of roads & sewers; three times the number of schools; twice as many community centers...etc. but about the same number of people paying for it all.???

I don't get that either. My Dad was telling me how his family among others helped to build the Broadway Community Centre..his Mom did fundraising and the whole community was involved. I don't see that kind of community involvement anymore. People tend to keep to themselves, I know I am somewhat guilty of it. I am better now but before having kids I had no desire to get to now my neighbours.
