"A spokeswoman for the museum said non-frozen soil is being brought in to give the dignitaries something to put a shovel into since the ground is now too frozen for the shovels any other way."

This is appropriate. A boondoggle ground breaking for a boondoggle white elephant museum.
Let's see the business plan.

what I want to know is how can you have a ground breaking when you have no clue what you want to build?

Business plan.. sure.. lets get that too... make sure to include the blue print we are going with... and how it is possible to meet current contruction costs.

This must really be to prevent the embarrassment of something unexpected being dug up by putting the shovel into the actual ground....

I understood the plans and specifications have been issued and the project is out for tender (or will shortly go out for tender). Just because John Q Public has not seen a plan don't assume one does not exist.

Youse guys are looking for demons in every closet.

"I understood the plans and specifications have been issued and the project is out for tender (or will shortly go out for tender). Just because John Q Public has not seen a plan don't assume one does not exist."
From their own website.
"The Board of Trustees has been elected and will now commence work on finalizing construction budgets and timelines. "
so .. where are you getting information that the plans and specs are out for tender? And guess what John Fricken Q fricken public should damn well know about stuff like this. Why would we not be allowed to know?

the demons are their own creation.
They have sent email replies and have stated that nothing has been decided on. They have sent replies and stated very loudly that everything is on track budget wise.. even though no other building could even come close to maintaining their budget for building in the recent skyrocketing construction costs.
Why all the secrecy?

I did not FRICKEN say John Q Public should not know. Read the FRICKEN post Deank.

Send them an email and ask them why the secrecy. I don't FRICKEN know.

Chillax a little dude.

I did send them emails GOM. More then once.
Thier response has always been. We WILL be on budget and a final plan will be decided on by the board of govenors thing.
Same completely impossible mantra for more then 2 years now. THERE IS NO FRICKEN WAY they will build that same building for the same cost as was projected 4 years ago. We will end up with one of two things.. a dramatically scaled down building that is more of an embarassment then an icon... or a HUGE wooshing sound as the money is sucked out of our pockets to cover the cost over runs. Minimum 150 million more then there projection.
Lets hope this sod turning on Friday, turns up more then just some fake dirt and we finally get some real answers.

From the Winnipeg Free Press
The Friends are in the midst of approving final construction contracts and hiring an executive director. About half of the $265-million price tag is for the building itself. The rest is intended to develop the museum's exhibits and multimedia presentations.

Construction is supposed to begin in February and it is hoped the doors will be open by 2012.

Is it possible that the project budget was prepared with the knowledge the building would not be built for several years?

Is it possible there were escalation costs built into the price?

Is it possible that the people behind this museum are at least as smart as you or I?

Deank

gee another change... ( originally far more of the 265 was for the building )..
There is no possible way for them to build that proposed building for 150 Million.

and another lie ( or misinformation if you will )
The late Israel Asper first raised the idea of a human rights museum in Winnipeg more than five years ago, shortly before he died. His daughter, Gail Asper, has since picked up the torch.

sigh.. no he did not.. why do they have to keep making this mistake. Izzie wanted a holocaust museum as he already flew kids from across the country to other holocaust exhibits and figured he would be better servered by flying them to a Winnipeg museum instead.

"Is it possible there were escalation costs built into the price?"
no.
No large project in North America properly predicted the enormous cost increase in construction that we have had. The only possible thing to make this come in more on target is the enormous downturn in the economy. ( and that just gets way to many conspiracy theories going for me to even want to consider )

Hey, never said they did predict the huge increases. But I will bet they had escalation prices built in. Gotta take a pill Deank. Your head is gonna 'splode.
