bettman and his cronies are icewholes. This is truly a process of trying to turn a sows ear into a silk purse. There have even been rumours the price will be dropped substantially. How counter-productive is that?

Bettman sounded very frustrated and defeated in his press conference today, it doesn't seem like hockey is going to survive Glendale.

Now see...why would that be a bad idea? (aside from the 120 degree heat)?

It's a big city...population 30 Million+

Out of those 30 Million, they could probably find 20-30k who can afford to attend a game or two...and it would be a REAL expansion of the franchise...rather than just adding teams cause rich people wanna put money in.

There are 5.5 million peeps in Phoenix. They struggle to place 6,000 people in the seats.

A large population does not guarantee peeps in seats. Witness Atlanta, NYI, Miami, Columbus... who've I forgetted?

We dont want someone like her here. If we did we would not have the new stadium or the expanded floodway.

All the more reason for someone like her and her group.

Remember when the ndp rescinded the law about balanced books? And ignored the law that said don't balance the books and you forfeit part of your salary?

A group such as hers could put the right kind of pressure on such sniveling politicos and their behaviour.

I'd like the wiseupwinnipeg group to morph into a government watchdog.

I was just being facetious. Of course we want a group like that with some teeth to it. But as I posted on the Freep. we as a city are cheering Goldwater.. but if they were here and we had similar laws, there would be a number of things that would be prevented here as well.

I am not even certain that the MTS centre would have been built. ALOT was given to those guys building it and ALOT is still being given to them.

How much = alot?

Was it 5%? 10% 50%

Was the baseball park the same?

How much is acceptable?

wellll..

for starters the building went over budget and true north said. meh.. too bad we are not putting more money into it so sucks to be you city of winnipeg

and that was 1 millionish or more.

plus there is the 100% VLT revenue going to them and if I am not mistaken the "entertainment tax" goes 100% to them?

so... maybe 1 million or more per year that goes to them from public coffers? not entirely sure since its a private entity they dont have to tell us crap.

Never mind the exclusivity deals that forced us to tear down the old arena and stops us from putting any public money into a competing venue for another 20 years. (ie no dome on a stadium)

Does that mean we can't expand Rainbow Stage???

Those Garby Hittman interviews are BS. The only problem with the Coyotes is that there aren't enough Canadian retirees living there, willing to fill the empty spaces in their arena, and they keep dying off...
Maybe Garby could offer special Canadian retiree packages which include season's tickets, homes, cars, and the lot...
Or, he could wait out for the next 4, oops, 8 years for the new Q-bec TaxArena to get built.
Just sayin'...
(But, boy, them interviews are worse than watching Family Affair re-runs...).

I KNEW IT!!!

The goldwater institute is just a front for a different organization

http://www.goldwaterinstitute.org/expert/230

heh..

I wonder what the chances are that Katz and Sheegl know a number of these guys personally eh? (or any of a number of our city "elite" who spend lots of time down there...)

Don't a lot of the condo conversions and new condo construction which is happening downtown get some sort of grants or something?
Would a Goldwater institute slow down these conversions since these conversion may not happen without these incentives?

Doesn't the Goldwater institute require some sort of change in the law to give them some teeth?

If the government was giving away money that a watchdog felt was irregular then I expect they woukd get in the way. What you are referring to are TIFs (i assume) and I doubt any watchdog would interfere with those.

A watchdog does not need "laws" as granted by a government to have teeth. In fact that would be completely counter-productive. The watchdog must be completely independent and non-partisan.

A threat of a lawsuit is all the watchdog needs. Just as it is in Phoenix today.

old mayor Scruggs seems to think the Coyotes could be gone in a matter of a couple weeks....

http://www.yourwestvalley.com/topstory/article_09d56e52-4fe3-11e0-ae97-001cc4c03286.html

If the team does leave, Scruggs said the city will have to come up
with a way to compensate for lost revenue, whether from cutting
other costs or raising taxes. Scruggs even mentioned the
possibility of pursuing a minor league hockey team as a replacement
anchor tenant.“We need guidance on this because we could be dealing with this in
just a couple of weeks,”
she said. “I cannot be more serious. We’d
need to find a way to cut expenses or raise revenue.”

It's getting closer................

We have yet to hear from the court on this and that should be happening soon I would think.

The Goldwater Institute has not yet filed their suit. They won't, I believe, until Glendale signs the agreement with hulzinger.
