There is soooo much chatter about the NHL returning to Winnipeg. Here is yet another story for the Winnipeg NHL fan. Since it was penned by TSN's Bob McKenzie it wears a larger suit of credibility in my eyes. Sigh. Is it Winnipeg's time once again?
The prospect of the NHL returning to Winnipeg has been much talked about for many years, but there is now, perhaps for the first time, a possibility of it happening and if it did, - notice the use of the word "if" - it could be as early as next season.

Now, don't confuse "a possibility" with "a real, good chance" because the key here is to keep this in perspective. While there's "a chance" it could happen, there's also "a chance" it could never materialize.

Still, one would have to say Winnipeg's chances have potentially increased if only because there may now be two possibilities - Phoenix and Atlanta - for NHL relocation.

Phoenix is currently on the NHL's front burner. The league is still working to find a way to close Matthew Hulsizer's deal with the city of Glendale to purchase the Coyotes.

The league is working overtime to overcome some issues with the sale of bonds that is critical to the transaction. It might work out. It might not. If it does, the sale is likely to proceed. If it doesn't, there are still some things the vested parties - Hulsizer, Glendale and the NHL - could do to salvage the transaction but there are no guarantees either. Time would appear to be a factor.

Winnipeg, of course, is ready, willing and waiting for the NHL. It has an owner and an arena and all have already done their due diligence on the Coyotes from a year ago and it wouldn't take a lot to update that scenario.

But if Phoenix should not turn out to be a viable option, perhaps Atlanta will. The Thrashers' current owners want out. That's no secret. But they are obliged by NHL by-laws to sell to local interests that, so far, have not materialized. But that's a dynamic that could still change.

The point is, Atlanta hasn't gone through the reality of "the team might leave" scenario that generates momentum in the market to find a way to keep it there.

Maybe that happens. Maybe it doesn't. Too early to say.

Are you noticing a pattern here?

But I would say this is the first time I've sensed there may be some possibility for Winnipeg.

Time is tight. If the Coyotes and/or Thrashers are to play anywhere other than Phoenix and/or Atlanta next season, there needs to be some clarity in the next four to six weeks.

So let's see where this all goes.

Its not supposed to be announced until the close of regular season 2011-2012 but things sometimes get moved up

Or was anyone kidding themselves into thinking that an AHL team builds a 4plex for training purposes and that some how magically two years in a row the world U17 championships are played in the same place?

And here I thought they built the 4plex as community service. Wink
That being said I still don't think we have enough people in Winnipeg who will be willing to cough up $150 per ticket for 41 nights (lower bowl).

Good thing all tix are not $150.

Good thing it will only take 0.01% of the entire population to sell out the lower bowl. Point zero one percent!

Glendale-Coyotes deal raises red flag

20 commentsby Darcy Olsen - Mar. 2, 2011 12:00 AM
Special for the Republic

Maybe The Arizona Republic was hoping the second time would be a charm last Saturday when it published the editorial "Back off, Goldwater Institute," asking the Institute to promise not to sue over a deal to keep the Phoenix CoyotesCOULD THE NHL RETURN TO WINNIPEG NEXT SEASON? Mag-glass_10x10 in Glendale.

I'm sorry to disappoint.

Following that advice would be to ignore the Arizona ConstitutionCOULD THE NHL RETURN TO WINNIPEG NEXT SEASON? Mag-glass_10x10 and give the city of Glendale a free pass to break the law.Glendale has a history of crafting deals under the cover of darkness, and the latest arrangement to subsidize Chicago businessman Matthew Hulsizer's purchase of the Phoenix Coyotes - to the tune of $116 million borrowed by city residents whose taxes are pledged to make up any shortfall - is no exception.

For months, media reports indicated the city planned to give a taxpayer subsidy to a new owner of the Coyotes, but Glendale held no public meetings and refused to disclose any information. At the request of the Goldwater Institute, a judge finally ordered Glendale to turn the records over for examination.

That court order was nearly two years ago. Just since Friday, Glendale has handed over 400 pages of documents.

Does this paperwork really matter? You decide.

Earlier this week, a Goldwater Institute investigative report showed that financial consultant TL Hocking has been accused in a federal lawsuit of inflating revenue estimates in reports used to secure funding for the construction of a city-subsidized hockey arena in Prescott Valley. That arena has never met those estimates and the bonds that financed it have been trading in junk status, according to the lawsuit.

TL Hocking's estimates are critical for Glendale's claim that it can repay $116 million in bonds with new parking fees at its arena, instead of using city tax money. We will keep digging until all the facts are disclosed.

According to Moody's, the credit-rating agency, Glendale's mounting debt already is triple the national median for cities of its size.

Is it any wonder that Moody's downgraded Glendale's debt when it caught wind of the city's plan to issue another $116 million in bonds? Moody's said the "municipal market faces credit pressure not seen since the Great Depression." I suppose Moody's should back off, too.

Glendale knows what the Arizona Constitution says. The city is well aware of the Arizona Supreme Court decision in January 2010 that makes it clear the gift ban in the Arizona Constitution applies to taxpayer subsidies by cities to private businesses.

Our preliminary analysis suggests new parking fees at the arena will not be enough to repay the additional debt, leaving taxpayers on the hook. Any investor should be nervous about bonds to back a corporate subsidy that may be illegal.

The Goldwater Institute has enforced Arizona's public-records law and brought sorely needed transparency to Glendale city government. We hope the city will do the right thing and avoid a lengthy and protracted lawsuit by coming into compliance with the law.

Darcy Olsen is president and CEO of the Goldwater Institute.

D'ya think Asker used TL Hocking's practices here perhaps? Wink

Hockings has a machine that looks just like a great big a$$ from which they pull numbers...but thay's where "due diligence' comes into play eh....or should.

If you want an idea of what tickets will cost, go to ticketmaster and pretend to buy a ticket to an Edmonton Oilers game.
Sorry, I do not think there are any $8.00 tickets. Sad

I think Wpger's will pay whatever is needed to get "our" beloved Jets back!
I remember 24 years ago taking my 2 "boys" to some of the games. What a treat watching these 2 little guys!

Sooo since we will be getting a team back here eventually.. is it not against existing copyright terms that they cannot be called the Jets? I guess the Ottawa Rough Riders came back as the Rough Riders... orrr was that the Renegades twice?

Anyway, just wondering.

Depends on who buys them and what they are willing to pay.

This is speculated on regularly. It is my understanding the NHL owns the Jets and all their trademarks and copyrights.

Personally I like the "Jets" as my primary choice. If that can't be I'd love to capitalize on some variation of Polar Bears. Maybe just bears but use polar bear symbology?

We had a semi-pro basketball team with some variation of a polar bear name and where are they now??? Heard on the radio this morning that Bettman is in town today. Wonder why??? Maybe to see if this town would actually support this franchise and at whose expense.

How about naming the new team the Manitoba Moose?

No. To both Manitoba (must be Winnipeg) and to Moose (I've always hated that moniker).

Holly, that was the Winnipeg Thunder. The logo/mascot was a polar bear but the club name had nothing to do with bears. That's a blast from the past lol.

Yeah, I think that you're right in saying that the NHL owns the rights to the name/logos of the Winnipeg Jets (eg. the use of Winnipeg jerseys in every NHL franchised video game since they left).

That's good news.

I've discussed different names as well and find that nothing really works besides the Jets. The Moose defiinitely wouldn't be my first pick, but coincidently, the favourite name that I came up with that grumpy old man was getting at was the Winnipeg Polar.

Anyway, it should and probably will remain the Jets. COULD THE NHL RETURN TO WINNIPEG NEXT SEASON? 143558

I'm with you guys on the Jets with a second to Winnipeg Polar Bears (or some variation). The latter would make "white" take on an entirely new meaning eh?

btw Dean, you can draw a pretty mean looking Polar bear with teeth showing et al...no problemo thereo.

Tyndall Park Thunder has the polar bear on its jerseys. One for soccer, one for basketball, one for hockey, one for baseball.

No I dont know why we are called the thunder and we have a polar bear on the jersey. I am not certain anyone does.

By Jove I think you're right! The first year anyway. BUT, were that team very successful right out of the gate you can bet they'd forget the Jets and chant Go Bears Go...
