I played my last round of golf yesterday and tomorrow, the John Blumberg golf course is planning on shutting down for the year.
My first round was in the 3rd week in April and then the third week in Nov. That's seven months, the longest golf season that I've seen in Winnipeg. It wasn't a great year for the courses, due to the cold, wet and windy weather (often, all at once)that saw the more sensible-minded people stay at home. We teed off in sleet, played in intermittent rain and in windy conditions that made most par 4's play like par 6's.
We played almost exclusively from the blue tees (we alternate between whites and blues each year.) I still did not break 100 at Granite Hills, the excellent but over-booked course near Lac du Bonnet. Ditto for Pinawa. I played four courses for the first time ever, Minnedosa, Neepawa, Kildonan and Wild Wood. Both Minnedosa and Neepawa are must-play courses for me now. I failed to make it out to a couple of courses that we play every year, Grand Pines and Netley Creek, partly due to the fact that they are extremely mosquito prone when it's rained a lot.
I played some terrible rounds and even switched to my old putter, just to shake things up. I also finished the year with some of the best games of my life. I'm driving the ball long and straight but I still haven't figured out how to hit my lob wedge properly. Overall, my scoring average has dropped five strokes, compared to last year.
I feel optimistic about next year. I just hope I can convince my foursome to make the 2.5 hour trip to Clear Lake, one of the top public courses that I have never played.
Anyone else have any thoughts on golfing in 2009?
