I expect it will go in Polo Park. I suspect a sweetheart deal has been struck that includes the stadium site and a new stadium at U of M.

This city needs both.

Apparently, it was reported, the place they're interested in is Kenaston and Sterling Lyon Parkway.

yeah it definately will be going in a "rich" area of the city... not polo park.

I reckon the land value at PP is twice that of Kenaston.

I don't think PP has enough space for them.

by rich I am referring to the people who live next door Jimmy.. and yes the people in the kenaston area are rich compared to the people in the polo park area. Would they get more bus service customers and walk up customers being in polo park? For certain. I dont suspect that is thier target clientel though. ( plus Kensaton is closer to the UofM )

That's what I was thinking....more the university crowd I'd think. But, being Winnipeg, you'd never know.

I've been in many million dollar homes and have seen "pictures" on the wall, proudly displayed I might add, that were from Walmart and Dollarama....worth all of $15.00.

I don't think those dumbasses at Ikea know about the Winnipeg market very well....otherwise they'd have come here long before Calagary.

I know the IKEA target audience. It is not the people who live next to polo park.. it is the people who live near kensaton. ( remember all us Winnipegers are cheap SOBs... it just the "richer" ones have a hard on for IKEA.)

They're talking about a million and a half s.f. of which 350,000 is the store. Not a bad size eh?

The biggest problem Ikea faces is finding real estate with enough parking. The Etobicoke store site would blow you away. They built a two deck lot that is HUGE. And full on weekends.

Actually, if they are considering the Sterling Lyon/Kenaston location...there's PLENTY of room there.
And there's a new hockey facility being constructed just across the street from where IKEA could go.

It would provide great overflow parking in either direction for both IKEA & the hockey centre.

Haven't been down there in awhile?

There's a brand new hockey facility, almost completed construction (as of the end of November...last time I was there). It faces Kenaston (can't remember the name of that side road)...and it looks pretty impressive.

Maybe they're planning to be a distribution hub for their other Canadian stores?

I'll correct my post a bit.

I don't know what the building is that's going up. When it first started construction, there was a big sign up in front that said it would be a new hockey facility...but that sign is gone.

Someone I know who works near there just told me, she doesn't know what that new building is, but believes the hockey centre was cancelled.

Why don't they make the new IKEA in the middle of the CPR yards? Great central position, easy train hub, lots of parking, centre of a future rapid transit line.
(I want 0.02% of all sales for the first 10 years, if this idea pulls through). Cool

Mayor's office is just beaming! 4 years from now and we'll have an IKEA!
We won't have to order on any more from the internet!
Never trusted that internet thing with all of its tubes!

Mayor Sam is announcing the rapid bus service route being changed from U.of W. to IKEA, instead of U.of M, and the route back to be serviced by trucks to bring back all the $399 sofas!
