There is AMPLE room for competition in Winnipeg. You don't live in some remote, barren desert like Tuktoyaktuk.

I'm glad Ikea is coming here. We did the whole mail order thing from them and I would never order from them again. I would rather shop in the store. Delivery sucked. Trying to return something that got damaged was a hassle. The reps in Montreal that I had to deal with were completely useless. Plus you don't get the variety through the mail order.

What has Lowes got to do with this discussion about Ikea? Can we connect the dots?

Lowe's isn't all that great...it's basically another Home Depot, RONA, McMunn & Yates, McDiarmid

And the prices are typically higher.

They claim their personnel are trained better, so when you go in with a question about something..."experienced" personnel will be able to answer your questions...not just point you at an aisle and then run and hide.

Personally I've found them not to be any different...since obviously those they hire come from the same hiring pool as all the other stores in that area.

Given a choice I'd rather see IKEA than Lowe's, as they have more to offer to the "general" public. Now...if we could get a Target here...THAT would be worth it Smile.

Actually yes I have shopped there. I bought a few things in BC, Toronto and I went to the store in Ottawa....it's cheaply made. That is my opinion and I know I will not become addicted to Ikea....

I'd welcome a Target. For me Ikea is just another leon's / brick / jysk. I'll pass on the Swedish minimalist styling.

Just found out today they're building an IKEA at 35 km from here and will be finished in 2009. I can't wait til it opens so I can bash away at them in this forum... Very Happy

This IKEA talk is as annoying as 'the Jets are coming back'. Guess what, folks, it's not going to happen in either case.

Any additional positive attributes that can be added to Winnipeg with decent economic spinoffs are hardly "annoying".

A group on the online social networking website Facebook called “Bring IKEA to Winnipeg” has more than 5,700 members.

ooo cause those 5700 people will shop enough to bring in a 100 mill per year... yup.. thats likely.

This is good news for Winnipeg, no matter how you look at it. I just hope that pessimism won't reign supreme here.

I see it being a smaller store... with not nearly as much on display and a very large attached warehouse and bigger catalog orders...just a guess though... its thier money they can choose to spend it as they see fit I guess Smile
(so long as it does not go in Polo Park.. there is way way too much development in there already)

I expect it will go in Polo Park. I suspect a sweetheart deal has been struck that includes the stadium site and a new stadium at U of M.

This city needs both.
