After all of the rumours and speculation, we finally have a sign from the company that they're thinking of moving here:
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Ikea_eyeing_Winnipeg_land.html

Maybe they saw Penthouse and Thomasville downsizing and thought "hey, that's just the opening we were looking for!" Cool

I personally talked (well, e-mailed) back and forth a few times last year with a representative from IKEA Corporate offices.

Specifically asking them if they had intentions on opening a store in Winnipeg (it was for a business proposal that I contacted them). They informed me then..."There is no intention to open an IKEA store in Winnipeg within the next 5 years".

This article doesn't change that really...it says it could still be many years away.

I have heard that the area is too small.

I've also heard that the mail-order business does so well from Winnipeg, so that's why there is so little pressue for IKEA to build here.

It's not too small anymore since Safeway is leaving. That entire parking garage and Safeway store can come down now too.

Why don't they just build a dedicated hub, for peeps to go pick up their previously ordered merchandise?

You're thinking adjoin it to the mall? There is a Zellers over the safeway - they might disagree with your assessment that the parking structure can be removed.

Zellers can move too Wink.

Or not...they can adjoin to the mall on one level...Zellers can be above them.

The Arena lot is big enough though...I've been to 4 or 5 different IKEAs around North America...and those lots/stores were about the same size as the Arena lot.

I really don't see what the big harm is in IKEA setting up shop in Winnipeg. Really. Not that I am a huge fan, but it's a desirable store by many, and if the demand exists, build it. The fact that this city is even on the radar shows that we are not some deadwater city with no potential, as these kinds of stores don't set up in places like Thunder Bay. It's private investment in the city, and everyone in Winnipeg is crying for private development; I say bring it.

Doesn't this same old story come up every couple of years? This seems to really be a story about nothing. What's the point anyway?

The difference, JTF, is that in the past the rumours came from outside of IKEA and the store officials have always denied that winnipeg was a target market. Now it's somebody from the store indicating that there's interest in Winnipeg.

I think they've always had an eye on Winnipeg as a secondary market, but no real rush to get in. My guess: they're looking at the current stadium site.

I cannot imagine them building in such uncertain economic times. I mean Michael's is going as are other stores.
Then again, WalMart still turns a profit.

My whole office is practically IKEA. Solid wood cabinets, solid wood surface on my desk. My shelves are not solid wood, but they look OK and do the job.

Even though they've gone on record as saying they only set up shop in cities with a million people or more, I've long suspected they've been eyeing us too. Perhaps they'll open an "outlet store"??

I know a great place for Ikea. Have them enter into negotiations with Terry Nelson and build it on their reserve. Then they can employ natives and get some of them off of social/band assistance.

I cannot see them coming here! They are way too high end! I think their sofas are around $599 and up!
Even Penthouse with their B.S. sales events , cannot write enough business at those high-end prices to make a living!

Winnipeg is their largest catalog/web delivery market in Canada. That, and their 1 million population requirement, was probably our largest road block. The Winnipeg arena (football stadium) location would be ideal for them. As would the Kenaston big box store area.

I would not be surprised to see them here well before five years (unless they have to wait for the new stadium to be built). That store would thrive here. As they thrive elsewhere in North America.
