http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Commuter-cyclist-groups-appeal-rejected-44363992.html

I dont get it, why do people need to "appeal" for 50 bike parking spots? Call me naive but are bike parking spots as simple as putting in a few bike stands? ie... if they see more and more people using bikes, they put in more bike stands at a very minimal cost by simply placing them on the sidewalk in front of the store(s)?

Good for City Council rejecting this nonsense! Let Ikea decide on the expense. If the demand is there they will look after it.
How few people would take their bikes out to Ikea? 3 or 4 at a time?

How are you supposed to bring that furniture back home if your using a bike?

I know it's all made to be assembled @ home, so it comes in a big box...and no, don't saw a trailer, that's not going to fly!

Maybe it's all the people who'd bike there for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Very Happy

You could bike to Ikea, pick out what you want, and have them deliver it.
They do have smaller items that could fit in a backpack.
There will be other stores in the area that sell smaller items.

I'd say there's enough reasons to have bicycle parking there...

Yes it doe's seem to be the stores decision it is their store and property. You wonder how many will really use them in this city of the automobile

Good bicycle lockups around this city are crap...maybe instead of the city telling Ikea to build some on it's lot, the city should build a public hitching post your bikes?

Or is that too "commie" for some?

I can see people biking there for sure.. heck its Winnipeg, bike pick stuff out and ask a friend to go for a ride later.. happens all the time. But there is no way the city should be mandating that, I can see IKEA responding quite quickly to throw in more bike spots IF THE DEMAND is there.

Geez, what is it with you Manitoban's and your obsession with IKEA? Wink

if you assign random number values the the letters in IKEA add 25% to each value, multiply by 16 then use the total of those numbers to extrapolate other numbers the you can again randomly assign to other letters you end up with the words

Manitoba Rocks

Its all subliminal and the real reason IKEA is called IKEA

I'm pretty sure the news release that I read from Bike to the Future said there was going to be bike parking at IKEA. It's just that Bike to the Future wanted more than what was being proposed.

http://biketothefuture.org/design-for-the-future/bttf-publications

Click on the Mar 17th letter to EPC. They appealed the fact that bike parking was going to be reduced from 140 spots to 50. Not that there wasn't going to be any bike parking.

holy shite... rereading it yeah .. they want MORE then 50 spots. Sheesh that is even worse. I dare say there will not be more then 10 or 20 days per year that the 50 spots are being used. full time. And again, even if it does start to happen.. still very easy to add more biking spots.

OK, see if I got this straight. IKEA puts in a proposal to build a stsore, which will employ many in the construction and in ongoing jobs, keep $$ in the city which are currently being spent elsewhere, as well as draw consumer $$ into the city, but a bunch of whatever put in an appeal that THEY want bike parking, not the guys who are actually paying for it, so they call the hearing and they don't even show up. Send them a bill and tell them they have no credibility to appear in front of Council or any committee again.

Maybe Bike to the Future wants to hold their meetings in the IKEA restaurant!

I concur. What they did was bullcrap...the arrogant jerkoffs should be penalized imo too.

Bike stands are pretty cheap. If their 50 spots actually fill up on a regular basis (not likely and not just a single organized occurance to show that it 'can' happen - if you organize over 50 people to go there on bikes at the same time to prove a point), they can toss in some more racks and get hundreds more spots if required. If people want to bike there the average of maybe 40-45 empty spots will be enough for them to find parking.
