Mayor's office is just beaming! 4 years from now and we'll have an IKEA!
We won't have to order on any more from the internet!
Never trusted that internet thing with all of its tubes!

Mayor Sam is announcing the rapid bus service route being changed from U.of W. to IKEA, instead of U.of M, and the route back to be serviced by trucks to bring back all the $399 sofas!

Damnit...just what we need in that area...more traffic!

Traffic isn't too bad in THAT area...it's when you get north of there that it's stupid.

Before IKEA comes in, they should decide what to do with that old base, and maybe wipe out the housing along that stretch.

Rezone it for a more "commercial" environment, so they can raise the speed limit...and get rid of that stupid camera light.

The money announced for the area was expansion of the lanes from Taylor south I believe.

We have to stop our resistance to change in this city.

traffic is totally bad in that area.
I used to be able to get out of the city southbound by taking route 90 south... 25 minutes.. tops ( unless stopped by a train )

and now because of all the freakin lights on that road. its a minimum of 35 minutes...

I drive down that way quite frequently...and aside from the stretch from Portage to Grant...I never have any problems.

Once I get passed Superstore, I fly pretty smoothly all the way to Pembina Hwy.

There are too many unsynchronized lights along Kenaston. And NO traffic management technology in use apparently. And even less human thinking. Ikea and related retail and other will add significantly to the traffic. But no matter where that store goes traffic will be a nightmare.

It's our blanket *approval* of poor planning that has allowed us to be in the mess that we're in now. Try and find anyone who believes that the city has been well-designed and planned. Most will complain about the bad planning.

If you read my posts you'll discover just how much I loathe the planners in this city. But the resistance to Ikea and the traffic are not necessarily connected. This might seem counter-intuitive but let's welcome Ikea to town and then get the friggen planners doing their job properly.

When I was driving tour buses in Montreal 14 years ago, one of the tour guides on board told the group there was a law (I'm assuming it's a Montreal law now, but at the time I thought it was Canadian), that 10% of any building cost had to be applied to city beautification or infrastructure.

She explained that was the reason for so many statues/flowers/trees/etc. throughout the city.

Perhaps that's what we need in Winnipeg...not to discourage businesses...but imagine how appealing it could be for a developer if they get to plan the streets and access to their property? Or if they know a percentage of their costs would apply to improve customer access? or appeal?

Boy, 2009 is gonna be real heavy on the wallet...
Remember the discussions about water? Things are already starting to heat up between European countries because of river diversions, dams, pollution, etc...
Welcome to the future.
Oh. Oops. Thread title. Uhm. Okay, IKEA will build Winnipeg's new stadium and the store will be built in and around it. 2 for 1 special. It will be built NW from the airport. (My prediction).

I'd go for a tax to reduce noise pollution. They could start with getting Jenny Gerbasi to shut up.

Somewhere, sometime ago, somebody zoned that area Industrial....arguably the Planners did so.

For Ikea to go ahead, this area has to be rezoned to Commercial.

How can the blame be put on our planners if what they say is always ignored by councillors.

Remember...Planners don't have money...Developers do. Wink
