DeanK what day is your pick up and at what time? I want to park over there and see where you dump the unpicked up garbage!

Deank wrote:"there must be clear access all around the container or it will not be picked up."

And my biggest problem with that little statement is that I put my "can" out on the street where parking is allowed. I can't exactly be expected to wait around for the truck and then make sure that no asshat has come and parked to close to it now can I?
Imagine your disappointment then when that happens and your bin is not emptied... Imagine the hundreds and thousands of angry Winnipeggers when BFI enforces that little policy.

Got my bin off the deck, threaded it through the cars in the driveway and parked in on the spot I cleared for it in the back lane. It was a lot easier than I thought, but thats because I installed snow tires on mine yesterday.

Don't do that. There's already too much garbage in there and it flows out ad nauseum.

say.... I wonder why we went with the smaller 240 Litre when it seems most others went with the 360 litre

Listening to some guy on the news last night and his comment was that he would need another bin. Isn't that part of the issue? In order to keep the costs of garbage removal down, which means keeping a grip on our tax dollars, part of the solution is to reduce the amount of garbage. Another part is to encourage recycling. Now I'm not about to join the Green party, but all someone has to do is take a trip out to the Brady Road landfill site and you'll quickly understand the problem.

WIth a household of 5, we'll be stretched to contain ourselves to 1 bin every cycle, but unless I try to do that, then I really can't b1tch about increased taxes as I haven't done my part. I don't understand how we generate so much garbage, as I thought my kids ate most of what comes into the house.

I'm also grateful that this was brought in now, not 20 years ago when I had 3 kids in disposable diapers. Any One In The Maples Got Their New Super Sized Garbage Cans? - Page 4 Icon_smile

What would help is for Winnipeg to switch over to a similarly sized bin for recycling as well.

It is amazing how much you can recycle. However putting loose or lightweight items into a small open bin like the city currently uses requires more effort from the homeowner to prevent spilling and items from blowing away on windy days.

My wife and I (with diligent recycling) can barely fill a large black garbage bag every week.

It's not a lot different than how we consume so much electricity. It's cheap. There is zero incentive to change our habits.

For someone like me fitting all my garbage in the one bin will be pretty easy, especially with recycling bins. But I can see larger families struggling. Especially those with little children.

This really should not be a one-size-fits-all solution...

did you know in Toronto they actually compost disposable diapers as well as a variety of other stuff that most people do not think is compostable?

I for one hope we get these same bins for recycling and for compost soon. (well maybe two or three familes per compost bin in winter)

today I was right at the limit for my garbage bin. BUT I know I could have done way better had I recycled more. and I would have done alot better without the disposable diapers in there.

Lets quit with the study on curbside composting and just get it done already. Its not like we are the first to think about it. HELL some cities in the USA have had a multi-bin program for over a decade already

you get three bins all attached... one for garbage one for recycling and one for compost. The truck picks them up and they dump into the proper part of the truck

In Toronto I had three recycling bins: blue, green and grey. We don't do nearly enough recycling here.

If reduction is a reason for doing this, they should be honest and straightforward about it, and not place restrictions on the amount of garbage one can throw out through the back door, again.

That is where this debate will end up....questions about amount restrictions.

Problem with recycling is that there is no market for most of the stuff, so we simply pile it up in a seperate place at the dump...that's bs imo.

Even with no market it makes sense to sort the recyclables. At the very least would it not help if the products that break down naturally were dumped and those that did not were stored at least until there was a market?

yup should be pilling it at its "own" dump. There will be call for recycled material soon enough. Hell I would bet that once a sufficient stockpile is reached it would even make sense to develop a company within Winnipeg instead of shipping it out. One one of the other cities websites states that 5- 2litre bottles make one large tshirt. Why the hell dont we have that happening here? Especially with our cheaper energy you would think it would make alot of sense.

Most cities have recycling plants that have automated sorters for mixed recycling.

Calgary's is pretty high tech.

HAH!

no no .. we actually have a pretty high tech recycling plant ourselves.. which is why they no longer allow plastic grocery bags cause they were screwing up the machine.

FYI, in the next few years.
Auto blue bins like our garbage bins. Also in the works are auto green bins, they are for grass clippings, leaves, household veg waste, table scraps etc.

Interesting goings on eh?

I still have a concern when the director (?) says he cannot get workers for collection and that they don't stay around for years (which were reason for this change).

I don't think he's telling the truth about not being able to get workers.

I'll bet there are plenty of guys that would gladly do the job....at what...$25.00 an hour?

Now that $15.00 job will be going up to $20.00 and we will have costly maintenance bills for the new automated equipment to boot.

I just don't see a savings or a benefit to us...the taxpayer (not the city bureaucrats).

I think starting wage was 12ish.
But most of the guys I talked to loved the job so I dont believe this " cant get employees" crap either. Are they going to do it for life? Welll thats pretty doubtful aint it? But just like most labour industry they stick around for a few years and then move on. Pretty natural cycle of employee turn over.

Exactly.

That's why I have to question the entire thing.

If it is predicated on bullshit, we should challenge this lie.

If that isn't the real reason, then what is? Kickbacks perhaps?

automated recycling bins a go.

Composting aint gonna happen.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/Weekly-yard-wastecompost-collection-too-expensive-83648227.html

nice to see these decision are made by emloyees and not the people nor the people that the people elected.

NOT!!!
love this little tidbit.
"
In a report to city councillors, the water and waste department recommends spring and fall organic-waste pickup, which would cost $232,000 a year in northwest Winnipeg -- the area currently served by automated carts -- and $1.04 million city-wide.
"

anyone remember how much per year automated garbage recyling is saving us?

I don't think there are any savings. Not that I've heard anyway.
