$350,000
The amount the city expects to save on garbage collection in the area using the automated system.

Did those numbers come out of someone's ass?

The two that I know of were "efficiency", but with no numbers attached other than more stops per day (which means nothing imo), and the fact they cannot get employees to collect garbage (which itself is garbage imo).

The numbers (of savings) are based on what the contractor submitted as a bid for automated vs non automated.

not sure where the numbers come from for the pickup in spring and fall... AND more importantly dont forget apparently no one is willing to be hired to work a job like that so I am not sure how they will actually accomplish this spring and fall pickup.

I personally like the idea of having three separate carts for garbage, recycling and composting.

Its amazing how much less garbage goes to the general landfill per household once people start making conscious efforts in recycling and composting.

I liked having a large recycling bin in Calgary and would have liked a large composting bin as well. Certainly save me the pain of having to bag leaves, grass and prunings constantly. Not to mention the amount of organic food waste that would be better off composted.

Hopefully the city composting service allows people access to free compost for their gardens.

I don't understand how we generate so much garbage, as I thought my kids ate most of what comes into the house.

You have a good point.

I guess it will be hard for people to complain that the 240L garbage cart is too small if their 240L recycling or 240L composting carts next to it are empty.

"Hopefully the city composting service allows people access to free compost for their gardens."

except the waste managers have said.. we really shouldn;t do the composting thing.

Yeah. I know. Sad. Especially when you consider the amount of organic waste a city of this size produces.

yup completely ridiculous

hmm.. 5 mill per year they say it will cost. with a 5 mill start up ( yeah whatever on the startup)

I wonder if a business plan exists in there somewhere for a private guy to make some serious cash.

Lets see. I will charge $5 per week from April 1 to October 1. or about $140 per year.

Doesn't the city subsidize composting bins for homeowners now? I believe they want people to do their own composting, while picking up from apartments.

unfortunately those compost bins are not the best ones and can not handle some of the volume that some people generate.

my neighbor for instance. 7 bags of grass per week.

Hey Sputnik..recognize you from your posts in papers...Cool...

What's funny about the whole thing is that the city doesn't even have the garbage bin thing worked out and then there now trying to move to the recycling and then there hoping to do the composting thing and with the same type of trucks and bins etc...Unbelievable already...

The details for the garbage bins are really important because the city is trying the program in those areas with relatively easy access to both front and or wide back lanes...I swere they have no idea what will happen in the downtown area considered as streets on both the north and south of Portage and other area with narrow back lanes etc...The city already has trouble bringing the present trucks down those back lanes already and they don't need to have the room these new trucks need because they need the extra space to lift the bins etc...I really don't know what the city is going to do...All I know is that if there had been proper debate with the public prior to approval...most of these issues would have been ironed out already...Oh well...more of the same Sammy as always...Approve and figure out how to implemented it later...GGF

I agree. It sure doesn't look like this idea was well thought-out.

Who said it was the Mayor\s idea?

Deank

heh.. just for the record.. I am not taking credit for the idea at all.. but I did send a letter to several councillors and the mayor at the time when Glen was trying to dollar bag us and suggested moving to a 3 bin system ....
At the time it was relatively new and almost unheard of, seems now we are just jumping on the bandwagon. Sure would be nice if Winnipeg was first at something innovative for a change.

Also of note.

MOST other places if they dont ALL have a larger garbage can they all at the least offer a larger one, based on family size. If you look at the trucks there seems little reason for them to not be able to handle multople capacity bins. So most of the crap spewing forth from the city like "but other cities are doing it and its just fine" while true, leaves out a huge chunk of detail

Also also of note. As you recall the waste managers basically sprung this on council at the last minute so I doubt it was Sammy's idea.

Here's my take on the city garbage bin deal...

"Garbage Sniffers" to come out and see if momma's "can" in the recycle bin...

"Garbage Pushers" to come out to help momma get bin to curb...

"Garbage Coppers" to come and make sure "Garbage Sniffers and Garbage Pushers" keep momma happy...

Total savings to Wpg taxpayers...Hum!!!...Can't tell but momma smiles a lot on garbage days...GGF

Here's my take on the garbage bin deal...

Try to limit the amount of refuse that households produce, thereby reducing removal costs and reducing the environmental impact by not filling landfills with stuff that can be recycled, and have those who use the system more have the privilege of paying more.

I agree except where we probably differ is on the method of execution and mainly the cost of the program which is not something I am interested in debating at the moment...My grandson who also has a flue which I am babysitting right now finally is about to go to sleep and I am soon to follow...so I'll leave with this in the meantime...
