nope.... the brochure does not state this at all. in fact it gives instructions for placing it at least 1 metre in front of our behind parked cars.

They interviewed the liaison guy from the city on CBC a couple days ago...it was one of the things he mentioned about it.

Question was what changes will people have to get used to...his comment was that the cans all had to go on one side of the street, so those from the other side would have to get used to crossing the street with their garbage.

He was asked how picky the trucks are about picking up the cans...his comment was that it will pick them up no matter how they are positioned, but if they are facing backwards, there is known issue that the cans won't open and the trash won't come out.

Our recycling truck goes up our street on both sides. I kinda think this will be the same.

I was visiting a friend on Saturday, she lives in River Bend. I much prefer the bins that are being distributed now to the single home ones we have from the original Autobin program. But they are small in comparison to what we have. She also showed me the instructions sheet provided and it looks ominous. "Bin needs to be placed XXX inches from this curb and XXX from this curb, must be facing in this direction, blah blah." I told her that for our bin collection, we put ours on the curb, as close to but not falling off, with the handle facing out and we make sure that the bin is not over flowing. The driver's are really good about picking up our bins. They do have a stick that they use to re-position the bins and the trucks are right hand drive.

Umm...on both sides?

Do you have the little blue buckets for recycling?

Then the truck goes up the street once, and guys jump off both sides and dump the buckets.

This new machine has an arm on one side of the vehicle...so for it to do both sides of the street, it would have to make 2 runs down 1 street. Kind of defeats the purpose of having the new cans/trucks to begin with.

my area they go up and down each side of the street. no running across the street to the other side.

same as the garbage currently they go up and down each side.

AND... regardless of "defeating the purpose" the new trucks will still go up and down each side of the street.

a further little blurb... no idea if its true or not. But apparently BFI is supposed to have 5 of the trucks... it only has one as of this past week.

Do you live on a multi-laned road? (ie. more than traffic flowing 1-lane in each direction)? or on a divided road?

I was thinking about the timing of this.

Is garbage pickup going to take alot longer now?

right now two guys one driver. within 10-20 seconds of stopping at the end of my shared driveway with my neighbour they have all of our garbage picked up. how long will positioning, raising, lowering, take? 10-20 second per? So wont that make it almost double the time for alot of streets?

Not according to the Thompson website.

Apparently it's about the same, assuming everything in in place where it should be.

well sure about the same for pickup from one house. But like in your backlane where they probably pickup from both sides at the same time and my place where they pick up from two houses at the same time.... wont this double it?

If they do this in back lanes, the trucks would have to have those arms on both sides or the truck will have to make two trips.

...and AA..I do have those small buckets and the truck does go up one side and then down the other...no crossing the street, like Dean.

apparently nope... arms on just one side.

Meh.....nah, you get used to them eventually....I've been living here for about 26 years now, and I'm just starting to slowly get used to'em....it takes a while...

Well, the guy clearly said:
"people will have to get used to putting all the cans on one side of the street"

So, I took that to mean lanes, streets, etc.

May be something to double-check...as I would think they'd want the vehicles to make as few passes as possible.

that may well be what "the guy" said. but the brochure and website only refer to that for backlane pickup

Man, I can see problems with putting out bins in front of some neighbour's places.

We put our recycling bins out for street pick-up, but our garbage is picked-up from the lane.

If they go city-wide, there will be problems.

I am not sure how this program will work for streets with back lanes or on cul-de-sacs, cresents, etc that have sharp turns to them like some in the Maples, Tyndall, Garden Grove, but I would think that the bins would just go out there early morning or the night before your day and then pulled back into your yard once the truck has been down your lane (or when you get home from work). We live on a street with no back lane so our bin goes at the very end of our driveway or right next to the driveway on the curb. The truck does a pass down our side and then comes back down the other side. We have to have the bin out on the curb by 6:30 AM on our day and by the time we are home from work it is emptied and we pull it back in. Once the program starts to work you will see it will be more efficient. These trucks are 1 person operated as opposed to 3 (driver and 2 pickers) so that is where part of the cost saving will come from. The bins are not meant to stay at the curbside or backlane, but rather stored in a relatively secure place - I have heard people say they will put it in the garage (if they have one) or close to/next to the back door. We store our bin, which is 3 times the size of these new ones, beside our house in our driveway and pull it to the curb in the early morning.

the problem I have with mine is that there is almost never any space near the curb because of parked cars. so i will have to place mine at the end of my driveway. Simple enough...

BUT... I have a very busy street and some days ( especially in the morning) it can be trying enough just to back out.. On the occasions when I or my wife must leave before the thing is emptied it will be extremely hazardous to move it. Back out into the street and block traffic. Get out leaving the van in the middle of the street place the bin back where it is supposed to be and then leave.

granted those occassions will hopefully be few and far between, but I am still very concerned.

Still haven't received these new garbage bins...our next garbage day is Wednesday so maybe we'll receive it before that..
