http://www.winnipeg.ca/interhom/servicestat/

compare... Tyndall Park ( point douglas) to St Boniface.

man oh man oh man..

thats a story that no one has reported on yet eh?

FREEP /SUN people!.. get on this NOW.

Its just like WOW! is it because people dont understand how/when to put the garbage out? Or because they are actually being missed or.. or..

man so many possibilities.

I'll bet that the peeps claiming they were missed had overloaded their bin or it was not in the right spot on the street for pickup. This will be problematic as long as we allow the picker-up'ers to nit pick the "rules".

So far I have had no issues with the bin. It is big enough so no problem there.

I heard that the trucks missed entire routes, so it appears that it's not the residents' fault.

The bin is plenty big for my family. The guy a couple of doors over has had his bin sitting on the lane in the same spot since they were delivered. Everyone else along the lane has moved theirs back into their yards. Seems okey dokey on my part so far.

OK...so I got my bin last week...first pickup was yesterday.

I did call and complain to 311 though about the bins on Saturday.

#1 - There really is NOWHERE in the winter to put the bins. Not really because there's nowhere to put it, but because the idiot behind me parks his car illegally in the back lane across the back of his driveway...so the only place to put the can is next to his car. So much for that "1m clearance" thing.

#2 - Last week, the garbage guys didn't even take my existing bags (about 8 of them) for pickup. 311 said to leave those though, and they'll send someone around to gather any existing garbage that was missed.

So, in all, the cans aren't bad...size is decent (unless I forget to take it out one week)...and they actually emptied it.

Apparently though, 1/2 the people in my back lane didn't read the part that said "pole side of the lane"...so their trash didn't get collected.

I have seen a few people on the news saying the bins aren't big enough....I find them to be big enough for our family of 4. I assume those who are complaining tend not to recycle. This spring we are going to start composting, so if anyone has any advice on composting feel free to advise away.

Yeah, if you want a free composter, sneak into the yard next door to me and take theirs.
They moved out and left it behind. But you have to be quick cause the house just sold Wink.

The best advice I can offer, is keep the thing as far from your back door as possible...cause it STINKS!!!.

Unless you have a garden though...where you're actually going to USE the compost...it's probably not worth the effort.
The only reason I would start is if the city comes through with their "compost pickup", then I might do it to help donate to the cause.

We have flower gardens and soon to be a vegetable garden. My hubby inherited his Fathers green thumb, which is a good thing. So the composted materials will be put to good use.

and thats one of the problems.. so now what.. those people who messed up are always going to be 1 week behind now?
Thats probably where all those reports came from that I have listed.
GC.. If you are getting a composter. Get one of those barrel kinds that spins. Otherwise its a huge pain to constantly do the turning and such your self.

Also... the city does free composting seminars. Check the site, they are probably going to be starting some again soon.

We are a family of 6.. one of those being a child still sorta in diapers and the Cans are large enough for us.

well, they didn't read the part about the "pole side", so probably....

but, they apparently can call 311 and explain that their trash wasn't picked up, and the city will send someone out to get the trash...this time.

There's apparently a 2-month "trial" period where the city will do this until everyone is following the guidelines...then they are actually talking about charging for extra pickups.

There are too many rules. Pole side. X distance from obstacles. No over-filling. I think maybe the city has lost focus: provide services that are of value to us. If it cost's a little more so be it.

I don't have a problem with the cans...had I moved here and they were already in place...I probably would've raved about them to my friends back in NJ.

Had the cans been around for 20 years, and then the city takes them away because they say it costs too much to maintain the trucks & cans...then everyone would be crying about how the city is evil.

I think MOST of the complaints being filed have more to do with "change" than "cans". People don't like things to change...it's an uncomfortable feeling for most.

My personal issue with the cans, is that they didn't think it all the way through, and that they have forced it on a public who doesn't want it. EVERY poll done about the new system have had overwhelming majority voting against it.

Is it a better system? It can be...if the public supports it...and if it's planned correctly.

I am hoping we get the recycling cans soon, that will make it so much easier.

I can cope with change. I don't want to cope with hauling my garbage across the lane to the pole side or my neighbour plopping his garbage down on my property and I get the obstruction and mess. What a deal!

Good point about public support. The thing is I wonder who was consulted? Are the elderly capable of coping with an over-sized container? Is he/she capable of hauling it across a lane and back in the middle of winter? Is the average large family going to have too much garbage? Am I going to be happy paying for another can if mine is stolen or run over by a car?

I don't believe this is an improvement. It is not even status quo. It is a reduction in services and I'm not happy with that.

This so some lame-ass politician can keep up with his lame promises not to raise taxes? What's next? Pick up every two weeks and a larger can? Then "community" bins picked up once a month?

frick that!

September is when they are scheduled GC..

so right now I am left with the delima. buy another recycle bin. and then have useless plastic sitting around come September... or just keep trying to stuff it all in my current two bins.

Yeah, but this is Winnipeg. The city that's scared of change. There is never initial public support for something like this.

HAH!!.. check the rules. They specifically say that you can NOT recycle blue boxes ( the boxes are too hard on the machinery)

But yeah I will re-use for something else no doubt.. but I am a cheap Ukrainian so the only question is me spending $5 on another box right now Smile

AGEsAces

why spend? there's plenty of them out on the street every few days Smile.

I'll probably use mine for grass cleaning...or might put one in the house to toss recycling, and then dump it into the "big" can when the time comes.

yeah I will probably use mine as a in house carry to the big bin thing. Probably give the other ones to my sister or mom and dad. Or just keep them and use them to make snow castle blocks.
