Back in the day doctors actually encouraged smoking. We've come along way and now know the harmful effects of alcohol, drugs and smoking!

I like what Holly posited earlier...why are the ads only showing women smoking around children? Interesting as I have had only two days to see these ads and had not yet seen that particular distinction.

Haven't seen the ads yet, but its hard to believe that you have to advertise to tell people that smoking in front of kids is bad. Making it illegal is even more stupid.

Well there does exist a great many stupid people out there.....case in point, the parents in the swastika trial.....

I believe there is a certain segment of the population that will continue to engage in dangerous behaviour regardless of the impact upon those nearest to them. All this ad campaign does is make the ad company, the media outlets and other contractual parties a bit richer.

All the ads do is bring awareness...to some of the idiots out there.

Remember...people who smoke are generally doing it for themselves...and don't think anything of it as a "bad" thing...and generally...if they are smoking alone (or with other smokers) I would agree...it's a choice that's made...leave them alone.

Being an ex-smoker...I do know what it's like...but now I get sick when I smell cigarette smoke. I think it's becoming more of a tolerance issue...as cigarettes used to be everywhere...so most people were used to it...but now they aren't so common publicly...so it's more noticeable when you do smell something.

The only issue I have with the ads, is that it vilifies the "holier-than-thou" crowd...and encourages them to chastise and berate those who may still smoke around their children. Obviously the "powers-that-be" have agreed it's an issue...and are trying to address it through education...and will probably pass yet another useless law making it a "child endangerment" issue. But I grew up around smokers (cousins, uncles, etc.) and was exposed quite often to thick clouds of it...yet have no ill effects (that I'm aware of) from it.

And with the changes in attitude from much of the public, and the government it would seem smoking will slowly diminish to only a handful of people who refuse to give it up. And then they will declare themselves a minority and demand all kinds of rights for the lifestyle they choose, because they feel discriminated against.

I'd bet that if you did a background search on the financiers of the ads...the tobacco companies have contributed heavily.

They get HUGE tax breaks (in the US) for running anti-smoking ads and "risk of smoking" campaigns.

MizPoint- what has believing in Hitler got to do with smoking in an enclosed area with kids or others?
Are you saying that both types are idiots?
What about people who fly all over the world, instead of staying in Winnipeg and suffering with the rest of us happy souls? lol

What's that? the tax breaks?

I believe so...basically it was like the concession here of putting black lungs on cigarette packs.

But the tax break for the advertising is a side benefit...it's considered a "Public Service Announcement" in the US...and big tax breaks are offered for those.

TV Stations get them too for airing "community content", albeit that content is usually aired at 2am when noone is watching anyway.
