Retirees today are the Baby Boomers...they are HUGE for IKEA.

It's because of the BB that IKEA is a success...and they'll just keep going back.

There must be a distinction between 'Retirees' and 'Seniors'....

I've been to Ikea in TO a few times. I can say baby boomers are most decidedly not their target demo in that area. Young families, decorators, university students. What is key for Ikea is PARKING. There has not been an Ikea I've seen that does not have the most stupidly full parking lot on weekends.

This tore will attract peeps from EVERYWHERE. ND, MN, SK, ON. It will be very successful. Making everything around it very successful. Especially the hotel. Wanna bet it'll be a Canada Inn?

hey that would also be a great spot for a stadium.. IKEA and the stadium could share the parking..being right on route 90 and close to perimeter would give it great access for before and after games.., and the hotel close by would be perfect.

Ummm...GOM...YOU'RE a baby boomer (or older Wink)...ok...maybe slightly younger...but you were there.

When IKEA started expanding...the "baby boomers" were still raising their families...and/or their kids were just getting started on their own.

The few times I've been to IKEA...I quite often felt like a kid walking in...cause everyone around me was at least 15-20 years older than me (I've been in 4 different ones...all the same feeling).

I know many younger people go...but usually to buy the "accessory" items...not the furniture.

And...for he who asked...the primary difference between "retirees" and "seniors" is about 15-20 years...and retirees are usually still looking for something to do...like building furniture Wink. The seniors are usually done with that...they just want to infest cruise ships Wink.

I'd be okay with that spot as well. I also like the U of M locale.

Hey...while we're at it...let's build a museum there too. They can all share the parking lot.

And we should make sure the hotel has a mammoth indoor waterpark Smile.

Maybe the differing Ikea experiences have to do with markets? I have been to two Ikea's in Toronto and one in Burlington.

I just got back from the meeting, which isn't a meeting just 12 large picturesset up on easels, and at 64, I was the youngest person there. The whole proposal is great for business , for jobs, for lots of traffic to wear out the streets (lol). This certainly will load up Kenaston from Portage Avenue to the new underpass, but since that underpass took 35 years appx, I know how patient Winnipegers can be when stuck in traffic or on a slow bus to the University of Manitoba!
This is a great investment, and the only thing I would worry about is how much in tax breaks will the city have to throw at this evelopment!
I would like to take a poll question for the City Council meeting on how many people will complain that the roads cannot handle the traffic! lol

The roads can't handle it now never mind once this is open , the road modifications they have planned will help but not solve it .
I really think the location is wrong but it is done and heres to them and the traffic jams, hate to see a Sat afternoon . Was a pretty good display but then why would they not have it all together . The investment is great but at what cost .

One really, really, really concerned resident who currently lives on Kenaston, is really , really, really, concerned about the ........................... drum roll.............NOISE!

She is not only worried about the traffic noise, but also the noise during construction, and noise from the roof top air conditioners.
She lives about a half mile away from the proposed building.
What can one say??
I am going to have to try and get down to that City hall meeting. I think I will make up a name of a bird, any suggestions, and claim that its only living area is where the building is being proposed! That should do it! I bet you I will get paid off by the developers! Any one in on this with me?

That would have as much credibility as the other claims that are being floated out in the media. Are these people whacked? It seems that the as soon as business is involved, everyone is against it. What a bunch of commie bastards.

There is already a sound barrier (raised berm and concrete wall) between the tracks and the homes there. And those residents can all turn down their hearing aids....

I wonder, what was the noise like when there was an intermodal terminal operating there?

I remember the traffic nightmares. At the time when you weren't dealing with the trains you were dealing with slow-moving trucks not to mention the turning trucks.

has to have been way way less then a roof top air conditioner... NOT!

I don't think the traffic situation will be that bad, what with the extra lanes they are putting in. Not like people are going to head there to shop during the "rush hour" unless they are already passing by that way. In which case, they will be getting off the road. This will just spread out the busy time. It could even make the traffic situation better!

I find it absurd that someone living on Kenaston would complain about traffic noises at all.

Noise and Traffic- 2 Loserpeg ideas for sure.
Do you think that City Council has ever heard these complaints before?
Or better yet, do you think that there has ever been any complaint other than those?
Too much noise is mind boggling loser complaint, if I ever heard one!

If they just stop building streets, that would reduce the noise and traffic. I should work in the City Planner's office.

And how do some figure that this development contributes to urban sprawl? Its not like this is on the outskirts of the city. Charleswood extends 8km to the west, Waverly West extends 9.5km to the south, and this place is only 5km from Polo Park anyways. Does this mean that residential development is going to immediately pop up to the west of Fort Whyte? Not bloody likely!
