coworker had an interesting resolution to the impass.
EVERY team owner has to actively play on the team ( at least 10% of game time per game) and if this happens the players agree to the owners demands.

I wonder what they would do if all the players who want to play in the NHL were dropped into a big pool for the teams to choose from.
Players are paid 100% based on length of time playing, and performance overall.
So say an offensman who has played for 4 years and scored 40 goals might get $4M/year to whatever team he plays on.
Defenseman is based on the # of points scored against him?
Goalie, percentage of saves.
etc.
And every year the teams make a random draw of the players...so the odds of having the same players year after year are reduced by how many players are playing in the league.
To be honest, I have no sympathy for the players on this conflict...as they are already overpaid for what they do. Crying about a percentage of the overpriced concessions is an insult to the fans.
Owners have more than just the players to deal with, they have the merchandise, the concessions, payrolls, insurance, management, etc.
And when you look around at the fans who play in their own hockey leagues, and spend a couple thousand dollars per year to play, and then still buy tickets to NHL games to help fund these overblown salaries? I think the players need to suck it up and get on the ice...quit whining about something that should be none of their concern to begin with...or go play in Russia where they get much less for their "service".
