Biking in the winter is not that crazy...even in Manitoba.

If the roads are reasonably clear, and you're dressed properly (spandex does wonders) you can maneuver quite well.

It's that hidden ice, and splashing slush that gets to you.

The best temp for winter biking is -10 to -15.

Anything under -5 is too slushy

Anything colder than -24 makes the drivetrain really slow

My Winter cycling wear:

Snowboard helmet
Ski Goggles/Neoprene Mouth & nose mask
Long Sleeve Cycling Jersey
fleece pullover
Windbreaker
Cycling shorts
Cycling pants ( windstopper front / spandex back)
liner socks
wool socks
leather boots
Gore-tex ice climbing gloves with liners
below -15 I put a hotpaws in each boot!

It's not that bad. I have friend who winter cycles - he wears at least two wool sweaters - I'd roast!

so the 10 of you who cycle in the winter.. that worth the 3 million dollars spent this year? ( I figure half of the 6 million because of half the year )

I use the roads, so there isn't a whole lot of this new infrastructure that is going to benefit me

YEA for St. Norberter Wink.

Actually, to be fair, most of the painted lanes are ON the roads...you just won't be able to see them Wink.

I haven't honestly tried riding my bike in the winter here yet. It's not the cold the bothers me...it's the risk of hitting the ice and sliding under a car that I'm more afraid of.

I also haven't found chains for my bike, and studded tires seem to be triple the cost of standard off-road tires.

I'm tempted though. Might give it a go this year just to say I've tried it Smile.

So I don't know how this article didn't come forward yet...I just found it today (didn't get Monday's paper at work for some reason).

Cycling on the Sidewalk

Posted my comment too:

Ok Paul...I don't know if you read the comments...but here's one for you...
STAY OFF THE SIDEWALKS!!!
#1 - IT'S ILLEGAL!!!
#2 - IT'S ILLEGAL!!!
I really shouldn't have to say anymore...other than since you've admitted to a crime, a cop should issue you several tickets so you can pay for it. Had you robbed a store, I'm sure they'd come arrest you!!
If cyclists would stay OFF the sidewalks, and ride on the roads where they belong, NONE of these ridiculous circles and diamond lanes would have to be built. Because vehicles would know how to drive around cyclists and vice-versa.
If you can't comply with the fact that a BICYCLE IS A VEHICLE, then sell your bike and buy a bus pass! You don't belong in the seat!
