How totally cool is this?
http://www.assiniboineparkzoo.ca/news.php?entry_id=11639
Visitors to the Assiniboine Park zoo will one day be able to watch polar bears swim underwater and get up close to them in a tundra buggy.

The province and the Assiniboine Park Conservancy today announced details of the zoo's new $45-million northern exhibit to be called Journey to Churchill, which is set to open in October 2013.

It is part of a $200 million redevelopment of Assiniboine Park.

"It will be spectacular," said the conservancy's vice chair Don Streuber at a press briefing at the IMAX Theatre in Portage Place, where a video was shown outlining the planned exhibits.
Proponents said Journey to Churchill, along with the Canadian Museum of Human Rights, will make Winnipeg a tourist magnet.

Situated on 10 acres within the zoo, the exhibit will also feature caribou, muskox, seals, tundra swans, snowy owls, arctic fox and arctic char.

Up to six polar bears will be on display.

up to 6 polar bears? in that TINY space crowded in with all those other animals?

I vote no.

also vote no to the tundra buggy. We trying to pretend we are churchill?

nice that they are finally going to make some bear habitat that means Manitobas minimum standard finally after all these years.

but it just seems to "forced"

The polar bear habitat will be 10 acres I understand. Yes, it would appear they are trying to be Churchill.

We need a fantastic water park at the ZOO, Somehwere you can escape during the winter. Yes even a beach and surf pool.

Connect that to the Conservatory and you have a very very nice tropical escape.

Polar bears, yup, I really need to see them at -30.

Thank god we only have a couple months of -30 then eh? I'm gonna go out on a limb here and spekulate you did not watch the whole video.

A water park there would be very cool as well.

Wow just pulled this off the Freep

In asking questions, it appears that Assiniboine Park was previously run
by a City Superintendent under the "Annual City Financial Disclosure",
whom earned less than $90,000...

How exactly can the current 'Assiniboine Park Enterprises" justify the "37 PLUS" administration positions found at:

We talking about some padding here ? My god, how lame are we.

We could incorporate the two and have a "Swim with the Bears" exhibit....

LOL.. Well... tehcnically the next 5 years of solar activity SHOULD make the northern lights bright enough to be seen regularly in winnipeg. But since that same solar activity will be killing us DEc 2012.. not sure if there is profit to be had.

Seriously, it looks like a fun time, but what impact can this have on Churchill. With flights to Churchill ranging to about 1500 each way and not much happening in that town oth3r than polar bears, is there any sense that we will hurt their economy ( and then, subsize for lost revenue )

My gut instinct is this will help Churchill. There is simply no replicating the real thing and peeps visiting the zoo exhibit might well be motivated to see the real thing.

Research done here will help the bears there and it will also become the place for researchers from all over to be . It will work with Churchill from what was said earlier . Environmental studies the thing of the future so they say .

How well they respond to being poken with a stick from asshat kids on a buggy ride would be my guess.

I love this idea! I think it will not only be of assistance to helping conduct research to the plight of the polar bears, but will also add to Winnipeg becoming more of a tourist destination with all the other awesome projects popping up all over the city.

It's about bloody time, too!!!

Been to Churchill, not much to see. So if i had a choice , I'd take the tundra buggy in Winnipeg. Churchill's gonna hurt.

Can't agree with that. The more people that are aware of the whole polar bear thing at Churchill will increase tourism. Its definitely on my bucket list.
(Actually my plan was to visit Churchill at Halloween in a polar bear costume, but I've been advised against it.)

Don't think you'll pony up the 3 G's to go the see the same thing you see can see here. A polar bear is a polar bear, heck, even youtube can satisfy your curiosity.

That settles it then...

Wonder why so many people flock to Disneyland. They can see the same thing on youtube as well.

Ummmm, it's not the same as being there?
