Nope. HTA just says you have to yield to someone in the crosswalk between the curbs. Doesn't say you have to yield until pedestrian passes your vehicle.

Doesn't say you have to yield til they reach the other side either.

Why would anyone pass someone stopped at a crosswalk? Or even slowed down at a crosswalk? I've seen many twits change lanes and pass someone at a crosswalk.

Oh, and I've witnessed this everywhere, not just Winnipeg.

"Why would anyone pass someone stopped at a crosswalk?"

Because they are impatient morons that
A) dont know the law
B) have no concern for other people's safety

Whatever JTF, your right (happy now)...go ahead and challenge a cop or a driving instructor on that one and let us all know how that turns out.

Or better yet, blow through a crosswalk as per your understanding, and after someone's been hit, explain your position to the prosecutor.

Nuff said.

I called the cops btw (986-6246) and asked. The cop didn't really know. He didn't have the HTA handy and ended up saying that, if you drive away and don't hit anyone, you're good to go.

Of course, if you hit someone, you didn't yield...ergo...blah blah....but the point is that the Act says to yield and as long as you do, you are acting within it. But it says nothing about proceeding after you've yielded.

but.. aren't you more concerned that the cops dont even know the HTA properly?

Yeah, it's not an isolated incident.

I got stopped by a cop who threatened to ticket me for riding too far out from the curb ( translation: impeding his progress to the Tim Horton's 1/2 block further). He shut the hell up when I quoted the HTA and corrected him that it didn;t use the term 'possible', it used the term 'practicable'.

ha ha ha..good for you.

...and Dean. I'm not really surprised as it is a big act and he didn't want to look it up...which again, didn't surprise me.

Wow.. are we really bickering about the fine print in traffic laws?

Shouln't it be common sense that vehicles should wait until the entire crosswalk is clear before moving as to not cause confusion for other vehicles or other pedestrians who are deciding whether they should, or should not, cross?

Either way, that crosswalk has always been chaos and I've always wondered why there hasn't been traffic lights there. This is good news. Drivers who are against this need to learn patience and thank themselves that they're not dealing with 2 hour back-up in larger cities.

Chill out and put on a good song.. christ.

That isn't common sense....that's just over-reaction and needless.

I agree to a point.
I am an aware driver and will start moving when I see that an intersection is clear and the crossing pedestrian is past my lane, but most drivers are simply unaware and will not learn anything until they wind up hitting someone.

It is a shame for conscious drivers, but last summer it seemed like every week a pedestrian was hit or grazed at that intersection. If it helps save lives and the only deterrent is delaying vehicles for minutes, then I'm all for it.

When I take the bus home from work I have to walk 6 blocks from work to a bus stop.

Without fail, I will always see the following:

A minimum of one, usually more like 3 cars running the red light ( as in entering the intersection after the light has turned red)

A large number of pedestrians crossing against the light ( Apparently the red don't walk means sweet frick all)

And often pedestrians dodging through oncoming traffic.

That's 6 blocks. People wonder why there are so many car/pedestrian collisions?

A few minutes ago I was driving south on Isabel.

I had to stop beside a cop at the crosswalk just nirth of Ellice.

There is a crossing guard that stays on the east side of the street til there is a pedestrian to help cross.

A pedestrian walked from the west side to the east and when he passed me (my lane) I proceeded ahead. When the guy passed the cop's lane, he too proceeded ahead.

This is all I'm going to say on this subject.

LOL - **NEWS FLASH** Startling news! Cops don't always follow the same rules that they are supposed to obey, and enforce.

in other news....Lindsy Lohan is still lookin' fine!

Do you not think that my pulling away so quickly (once my lane was clear) right beside them would not have caused them to pull me over if I had done something wrong?

They pretty much followed me along the road until Portage Avenue, where they turned off. (...and I was going 55ish all the way too.)

Perhaps JTF...or they could be responding to another call somewhere, and your little misjudgment was not as important.

Here's the most logical reason the cops did nothing to me....I did not do anything wrong.

I guess the most logical reason the cops arrested you the other time was because you did something wrong then?

Based on your storey I would have though no.. but based on your reasoning I have to go with yes.

Rolling Eyes

Sometimes your logic doesn't go all the way to the top floor I've noticed.
