Heh. Somehow, I really doubt that is the case.

"I remember getting into it with her over funding her little community center. It was very evident at the time that she was simply making a job for herself....it had nothing to do with helping the children.
Perhaps she's changed, but that was the situation back then."

that must have been your misintrepetation. I am quite familiar with it, and it was not her that they wanted to keep permamently it was another very qualified lady that they had to let go and by time the funding came through she was no longer available.

Me or Sputnik?

If it's the posting in the IKEA thread over there, that's me.

I dunno, I kinda get a little peeved when people judge others without knowing their situation or the choices they have willingly ( or otherwise) made. It's one think to say you don't agree with a car dependent lifestyle, or that you would be happy to give some ideas about moving away from that type of lifestyle to those wish.

But to say you pity them. Please.

Here's an interesting blog posting on the proposed development:

http://anybody-want-a-peanut.blogspot.com/2009/03/suggestions-on-ikea-development.html

I tend to agree that a) it needs an overpass, and b) it's going to be a nightmare to try and walk from one area to another.

I'd
also suggest that they even back the stores onto Kenaston - I would
think most people that go there will be going as a destination trip,
not because they a re just driving by, so why does there frontage onto
Kenaston?

Wow. I just went over to the dark side. Spooky. They are in a tunnel all their own. Remembers me about how long it took me (in Italy) to explain to Mr.Nobody and Northender, that Higgins Ave actually goes under the CPR tracks and not over them...

Sorry, I kinda blathered that post out. It looks like the north part of the development is set up so that some stores kind of face Kenaston as you are driving north, and there is parking that fronts onto Kenaston. This is going to be a destination mall ( I don't think a lot of people will drive by and go "hey, that's what I need to pick up at IKEA.). I think it may be better if allt he stores were fronted away from kenaston - might reduce some noise pollution, and reduce speed going into the area.

Did that make any sense at all?

There is one building that backs onto Kenaston - to me it definitely does look like its facing Kenaston.

I'm confused with the terms here.

Do you mean that some buildings are close to the street as opposed to being set back with parking close to the street?

See the map...

http://anybody-want-a-peanut.blogspot.com/2009/03/suggestions-on-ikea-development.html

I think St Norberter and I are interpreting differently which way that building at the corner of Sterling Lyon and Kenaston is facing. That's all.

It's not that one ( It looks to me like it is facing west), but the one on the corner of wilkes and Kenaston. It looks like it is facing S. Turn it 90 degrees so it faces west, and then move it a little bit south, so it is beside the building at Sterling Lyon and Kenaston.

Oh THAT building. I see what you mean. But see those two little buildings south of it? (Tim Hortons and a McDonalds, perhaps?) They probably want visibility from Kenaston to attract hungry stomachs driving by... Wink

FlyingRat- those auto pieces are hilarious!
What thread on new Winnipeg? I looked and couldn't see anything nasty regarding Northender!
She and I do not see eye to eye on global warming, but we are friends, no nastiness. maybe he does not want to start a fight because I am bigger, and have more NorthEnd experience!
Someone put 4000 jobs for IKEA, but it is only 400.

You need to look harder; it's all there in black and white, expect much of it has been censored by the gargoyle and his minions.

i'm confused...is that drawing really the plan proposed?

What kind of idiot would only have parking lot access from one road?

Why isn't there access from both Wilkes & Sterling Lyon?

I can understand none from Kenaston...and agree an overpass should be put in there...primarily for commuters who don't want to become a part of the shopping centre melee.

Wilkes is no longer a "road". It was cut off when they put the overpass in. There is an "off-ramp" from Kenaston going into the east side of the development too.

Breaking News reported by Tom Broadbeck from City Hall meeting tonight!
Complete surprise in Winnipegers complaining about IKEA! 3 Things never brought up before:
1) too much traffic
2) too much noise
3)City perhaps giving too many $ to IKEA for development

It's the corporate battle of the fittest. I don't believe this new retail complex will result in any significant retail losses. One can argue that big box cluster further south on Kenaston would have had the same impact on the marketplace. Anyone notice dozen's of retailers spontaneously closing their doors as those stores opened theirs? And if a couple fail the jobs will easily be recouped in the new stores.

I also believe that there will be a number of never-seen-before-in-Winnipeg retailers opening their doors at the new locale. This will become a destination shopping mall that will attract shoppers from Saskatchewan, Northern Ontario, Minnesota and North Dakota. It might even stem the hordes traveling to Grand Forks to park their dollars.

Think BIG Winnipeg. Dare to dream.

Winnipeg sofa warehouse stores are just shuddering. This week an all leather sofa was advertised at $499 and a fabric one at $299. IKEA hasn't been planning an opening in Winnipeg because IKEA has NO SOFAS THAT CHEAP!!!!!!
Wpg has the lowest advertised prices in the world. Sofas Made in China sell lower in Wpg than in China!
IKEA is coming here as a last choice, and has taken into account that they do a good business here off thier internet listing.
Their next choice in Manitoba isn't Lockport or Selkirk.
They have good design, good value, and if you know how to screw things together and don't mind buying inexpensive(cheaply made) knock down furniture, then great!
If they bring other customers, currently living out of town, into Winnipeg everyone, every store in Winnipeg will benefit, except that lady living on route 90 who counts how many cars and trucks go by her apartment on Kenaston, and that guy living near the CN rails who is worried that the back up warning beeping noise from trucks will keep him up at night.
