Yeah...I had the idea of doing it and putting a sign up at Sears (this was in the US) and Staples.

The next time I went into Sears...a sign was up that said "Furniture Assembly $50".

Though...there still might be a market here...as that assembly is done in store...whereas mine would be in your home.

Someone who's experienced at assembly, and who has customized a couple of battery powered drills/wrenches can get a full bookcase/desk built in under an hour.

So a $50 fee for assembly would not be unreasonable...especially done in your home.

how much do IKEA things cost? $50 might indeed be unreasonable. Instead charge $10 and have it recorded. Sell the recording of you doing it for $1 on the internet. Eventually you will have a huge Library of the different IKEA items and how to properly put them together. You can sit back and let the profits roll in.

The price to charge is not a matter of the cost of furniture Dean...it's a matter of how valuable is YOUR time?

For some people...putting together those things are a nigthmare...and fiddling with it for 3/4 hours is just a waste of time.

For someone like me to come in and spend 1-2 hours doing the same assembly, using my own tools...it might be worth the $50-100 assembly fee (my fee would be based on the unit type...not length of time for assembly).

Initially...assembly times will be longer...but as familiarity with the units becomes better...it would improve and raise profit.

Damn...I shouldn't be giving away my secrets like that Wink.

Anyway...there would be a great "side" business there...but certainly nothing that could sustain a full-time business. Though I'd consider doing it and hiring someone to work for me.

Anyone want a job? Very Happy

I would suspect that the people willing to pay $50 for you to assemble a $50 item, might be just as willing to buy a $110 item pre assembled and delivered from another store in town.

I already have a job...but a good side job that people would actually pay me (you know, with money and junk) to do, with no annoying phone calls expecting free support at all hours of the night....that would be pretty sweet!

Plus, anyone with two hands, a heart beat and some semblance of common sense (not to mention the ability to follow directions) could put that stuff together!

That's like a golden goose right there!

"But then it wouldn't be from IKEA Wink."

and that might actually be a selling point Smile heh

but I though people purchased from IKEA, not only because of selection, but one big reason being the money saved from assembling yourself.

you got to watch the price point.. that why getting 50 people to pay $1 would be easier then 1 person to pay 50. Hell, maybe you can get so good at your job of making videos that IKEA just hires you to do the videos, hosts them on their own website and included them for free in each product and just gives you 10 cents everytime one is accessed world wide.
considering their sales volume you would be rich inside of a year

Ikea has received the necessary site plan approval for its proposed Winnipeg store.

City council approved the project with a vote of 14-2 in late March but the final hurdle was a legal formality — the official reading of applicable bylaws. That was done Wednesday, said Kerri Molinaro, president of Ikea Canada.

The Swedish retailer's 350,000-square-foot store will be the anchor tenant in a massive big-box development at Kenaston Boulevard and Sterling Lyon Parkway. In all, the full development will turn about 80 hectares of industrial land into the largest development the city has seen in 25 years.

Molinaro expects construction of the Ikea store to take 18 months, with an anticipated opening between late 2011 and 2013. But before that even begins, the necessary infrastructure must be done on the roadways and land preparation.

The project developer, Winnipeg's Fairweather Properties, must first widen streets in the area and install new traffic lights.

It is expected to take about 12 years to complete the entire development. It will be done in stages, starting next year with the Ikea property and followed by more than one million square feet of commercial and residential development , including the possibility of a 100-room hotel, 500-unit condo building and 16-screen movie theatre.

Okay, I innocently went to IKEA today, just to check the place out, to be able to comment after actually having seen the place from the inside.
The store was half empty.
Had a close encounter with a security guard telling me I had to go two floors up in order to see the main level.
Went up the two levels, walked through them seeing pathetic junk on display.
Headed back down after crossing the whole friggen store.
Made it to the main level, only to see that the junk on sale there was worse than the dollarama stores and more expensive.
Made my way towards the exit where I had entered, only to be encountered by the security guard once again, telling me it wasn't the exit...
Finally found the exit and used it.

SO NOW I CAN FINALLY BASH THE FRIGGEN PLACE ALL I WANT!
AS I HAD EXPECTED, IT'S THE JUNKIEST STORE I'VE EVER BEEN TO, AND A BUNCH OF RICHIES IN FURCOATS COMING OUT OF THERE WITH SHOPPINGCART FULLS OF GARBAGE, ONLY CONVINCED ME MORE THAT THE PLACE IS A WASTE AND WON'T SEE ME GOING IN THERE EVER AGAIN.

/end daily rant.
