This facility will only get this grant once no.

Of course they do, as a church. Your contibutions, to a point, are tax exempt, and not taxable at the other end.

I keep telling you....there's big money in the church business.

That's all they need....as they will only build once.

Isn't this a good enough idea to stand alone and move forward?

Well, just what is "the idea"?

Help kids?

Save souls?

Recruit new donators?

Create jobs?

Fill a vacant lot?

Too many naysayers in this city. I see nothing but good coming out of this project, especially for at risk youth.

Again. You are missing the point to the disagreement.

That's what I love about some....how easy it is to switch pages and obfuscate the issues.

The question to be asked is what is the Cost/Benefit for the at risk youth, in becomming Christian converts, as opposed to Muslim, Gang, Drug dealers on the street etc, etc.
Why does this have to be a faith based project as opposed to an Anoriginal project because 80% of the peeople on the streets are Aboriginal? Why haven't the Aboriginals been given a priority? They have that beautiful building just across the street? They have probably 6 people who would like to help out!
MizP and MrP live close by, and she is a hell of a Chef and I bet you she could boil up some moose meat ?and MrP could increse his great picture gallery as the building progresses!
Aboriginals don't need the added burden of "Jesus"!

Again? That was toban71's first post. (BTW welcome to the sandbox!)

But do humour me, because I agree 100% with toban71.

How easy is it to switch pages and obfuscate the issues. More to the point just what does you mean switch pages and obfuscate the issues?

I don't support the luring of kids to this center with fun and games and then indoctrinating and brainwashing them.

I think the location is terrible. Children would have to walk down Main Street, under the tracks where the human garbage hangs out and shoots up, lots of ugliness there....this is retarded. Why are our community centres not receiving this kind of funding? They could use the money and they are safe havens.

I agree that the location is certainly not one that I would pick. The $$'s that go into our community centre system needs to be re-examined. There are too many inefficiencies in that system to justify increased funding.

if you mean in that area? simple.. because there is no one there to run them.

I'm curious...aren't there JCCs up here? (Jewish Community Centre)

Don't they get funded partially by government grants/loans?

When kids go there, are they hoarded into a corner and fed some rhetoric about how Christians are evil? and being Jewish is the only way to live?

So why the outcry for the Youth for Christ centre? It would basically be the same thing. About the only thing they MIGHT do that you won't get at a public community centre, would be prayers before events...but I've been to some public events recently where they had a prayer before the thing started.

Not true in the case of Norquay CC. We have a solid volunteer base. What we are lacking is much needed upgrading to our aging facilities.

If you have such a solid volunteer base it sure as hell would be nice if you sent someone to even one of the sport committee meetings for the area.

not meant as a dis.. just meant as saying something very frustrating

We see that asshat from the area (no names mentioned but you know who I mean MizP ) stand up and yell at city wide meetings that how come there is no sports teams in the area and blame the city and everything but when it comes to hockey and soccer meeetings having anyone from the area show up is VERY RARE and when they do show up they have dont have much to contribute and WORSE.. they dont advertise registration dates nor take or submit even a single kids name for sports registration.

TO top it off... they are still considered members of the association so getting quorom at the meetings must include them as a percentage...

My ex's Mother is one of the people responsible for the Women's Resource Centre in PD among other things. She is involved in almost every group, committee etc in PD. I have sent her an email asking her what she thinks about this new rec centre planned for Higgins and Main.

I know who you are referring to dean...my ex mother in law also has a lot to do with Norquay cc and school.

I don't see anything particularly funny in what Dean had to say. He is frustrated. I used to be on the board at Norquay CC and left the board because of all the infighting and trivial power struggles. I do know for fact that there are two dedicated individuals doing the best they can with little resources or help. This is one of the biggest problems in the inner city - finding volunteers and it is ironic to say the least that those of us who have volunteered hundreds of hours and our expertise usually do not have the time to volunteer because of work. Yet and all here we are helping anyway.

And the biggest complainers are the ones who do not help.

My criticism is of the community centre system, not necessarily of the many hard working and dedicated volunteers who try to work within a terribly perverted system. In an effort to de-politicize the system, the administration has handed power to what is turning into another political cluster frick called the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres, whose mandate and role is unclear to anyone. Instead of supporting the volunteers, they contribute to their administrative workload with no noticeable benefits to the cc's.

I agree....I used to attend the GCWCC meetings and came out of them feeling like my time was being wasted, our needs not being heard etc...
