Who had to be informed? I wasn't, but then again, why would I?

SHe's supposed to be my MP, but she's introducing a private members bill, but she never asked me. Same bullshit.

We elect people to take care of things, let them take care of it. Just because I don't agree with something, doesn't mean I have to be consulted.

You are missing the point completely.

Where did this thing come from?

Have you ever asked yourself where do the things that council spends money on come from?

Out of the blue, as people around city hall have said, this comes along and .....pooof....here's millions....in a cash strapped fcuken city!!!

But there's lots of projects being announced with City money involved. Just a few that I know, Seven Oaks SOccer complex getting money for new turf and air conditioning, the Wpg Soccer Federation installed articial turf on 2 fields at the Waverely Complex, Red River CC getting money for rink development, Maples Collegiate redoing a football field. You never hear about these until they're announced. People with a committment elicit the support of politicians at every level, private sector committment, negotiate, etc and get these things done all the time. Not sure why YFC should be any different.

"Where did this thing come from?"

The reports in the news were quite clear on where it came from. The YFC was working with the University of Winnipeg for over a year in attempt to consolidate the YFC resources downtown. That deal fell through and CENTRE VENTURE was recommended to them as a possible way of getting the deal working. CV worked with them, came up with a deal that saw an unused piece of land that they have been trying to develop for years, finally get used. Once CV worked out the details that took it to council.

you know.. just like ANY OTHER BUSINESS GROUP DOES WHEN THEY ARE TRYING TO DEVELOP DOWNTOWN

JTF, as to the garbage fiasco. Again you are completely missing the point. The city Managers FCKED UP big time on that one and it was basically forced on councils hands because the contracts were expiring and there was little they could do other then accept the crap thrown at them.

Let's not forget that Judy WL is mulling the mayors job, so obviously she is just
looking out for OUR best interest and has no other potential motive in
mind such as publicity or attacking her future opponent on the ballot....

oh, wait.,...

Maybe YFC could invite her over and have her picture taken so she can put it on her next calendar?

And this is of course the same Judy who knows nothing about the laws governing the city so we can obviously accept her thoughts as bang on.

Dean That's the frigg'n point.

The tail is wagging the dog.

It has been for years.

And is exactly the reason that if I were in office I would fire/demote/whatever the managers in this department the moment they brought the first plan to me with no time to investigate it and vote properly.

The second thing I would have done would be to ask the current contractors for a 6 month extension of the current contract at the current rate +5%. ( for consideration of extending the current contract)

Ya....but c'mon....didn't these mother'effers realize that contracts do run out.

Another issue is the helicopter thing.

Reports have clearly shown that they are expensive and do nothing.

What is the WPS response....we have to have one.

totally blame the council members for jumping on that bandwagon. They should have said... thanks for the advice police officers who have a significant stake in the problem, we are now going to seek outside independant advice.

hell there are cities all over the us with lawsuits against the city and the police services to get them to stop using helicopters because of noise and EXPENSE without any real value.

Wrong thread for noise complaints.

That's the problem, as some see it.

These million dollar deals come from nowhere and are overwith before anyone questions them thoroughly.

It's been going on for ages, Dean.

Depends who writes the report and what you chose to believe .

No it doesn't.

But don't ask a monkey to do a man's job. Proper audits have shown very clearly that there is an extremely poor value payback with helicopters.

How does one measure value when it comes to police helicopters? Are there statistics that say arrest rates increase or decrease? Or crime rates-increase or decrease?

Have we measured the value a squad car brings versus walking the beat?

Can they be double-dutied as medivacs? Will they in Winnipeg?

Or is this more about optics?

They speak about response times and actual effects upon arrests.

The reports have brought out facts such as car chaces lasting only a few minutes and helicopters being useless unless right on the scene at the time.

Of course, there is the obvious...costs vs. effects.

Does it matter how fast the cops catch them if they only get a mickey-mouse sentence like serving their sentence in their home?

grumpy old man

Certainly it does. Keep catching them and catching them. At some point the punishment will fit the crime. Until then keep catching them.

Actually I feel sorry for the cops. (Yes, I know this goes against the grain for some people, even on this forum.)
But how would you feel if you keep catching them and the prosecutor & lawyer deal the charges down or they get some mickey mouse sentence?
And please resist the urge to tell me "then they should quit and find another job".

I think you'll discover most peeps will agree with you. Certainly I agree with you. It must frustrate the bejesus outta the police.

We should encourage the Police to not give in to their frustrations and keep arresting the idiot bad guys that don't play nice in society. These bad guys know the system very well and I believe count on its' inherent uselessness.

Why should police quit the courts and the justice minister are the problem .

Parliament resumes next week. Look for justice matters to be front and centre. The Conservatives are finally comfortable that the majority of Canadian's have their back on this issue. They will put the opposition on the hotseat this time around. Look for confidence motions. The only question is - is the opposition still blind enough to think they can oppose it "on behalf of Canadians who don't want more jails". If you like politics - this next session will be exciting - strategy-wise.
