If it makes good business sense to bring an NHL team to Winnipeg, it must be because it will be profitable. Otherwise it would be bad business.

However, if government money is needed for it to be profitable, I say no to government involvement. IMHO, government should not be funding private sport franchises.

I absolutely detest a ssholes that attempt to put a sport franchise in the same boat as a sewer system, a water system or a road system, etc. It's BS to do so imo.

I dont mind a small initial investment, provided that investment has a proven way of being recovered in 5 to 10 years from the EXTRA taxes brought in.

Key being EXTRA.

There is only so much money in Winnipeg. Say we used government money to pay for a new gas station. Sure that money would be recouped from this new gas station in say 5 years through taxes... BUT... aint the new gas station only making money by other gas stations no longer making as much? Answer.. most likely. so there is no NEW EXTRA money and it should not be using government money to start up

So, how much would it cost an owner to pay 30 minimum wage NHL hockey players' salaries?
Who says we have to have multi-millionaire hockey players on the team roster???

The NHL bargaining unit.

They give a salary cap, per team. They don't say you can't pay each and every player the minimum NHL salary.

The most you can spend on players is currently $54.9 million, according to the latest CBA.

The salary floor is around $41 million. That's the minimum you'd have to spend per year.

Both ends of the range are peanuts compared to what it costs to run NFL and MLB franchises! Wink

minimum salary this year is 500K.

with a team minimum of 25.5 million I think..

That'll get you 51 hockey players. Quite a choice for a coach.

There is a minimum...

That'll be 84.6 players. We'll have to sacrifice a butchered cow for third goalie.

"SO FAR" the Chipman's and Thompson has said very very little. I expect they've crunched the numbers every which way and concluded an NHL team can succeed in Winnipeg. I believe the very best an owner can expect given today's realities is break-even on regular season and profit on play-offs.

I would love to see the NHL return to Winnipeg.

actually... the math works the other way.. in essence even though there is a player minimum of 500K... having a team minimum raises the player minimum.... not increases the number of players Razz

.

Perhaps they realize an NHL team will not fly in Winnipeg. But they are not saying anything because they to not want to alienate their Moose fans who are wanna-bee NHL fans.

That's surprising given the number of teams struggling. The mere presence of a cap helps a city like Winnipeg afford an NHL team. I don't think it is a deal-breaker but such news is not good news for Winnipeg.

This news ain't much better: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/2010/12/06/16451286.html

amazing how the cap can continue to go up and up yet the attendance figures from many southern teams have been atrocious especially this year.

From my reading on the cap yesterday, most of the increased revenues have been from TV and other deals, not related to attendance...you know, the main driving force that pays the NHL's bills.

here's my question...why wouldn't the cap be coming DOWN?

I mean...where are these hockey players going to go?

The reason they increase the cap is so they can get "better players" on various teams.

But if the cap came down, the teams would only be able to offer so much...and the hockey players would go "where exactly?"

It's not like they could go join another team making more money somewhere else...because all the teams in the NHL would be affected by a cap.

And any of those whiney players who think they "deserve" another $1M or so...the teams can (and should) say "too freakin' bad"...good luck making any more somewhere else!

There is a league in Russia that is paying comparable salaries. Let them go there.

The reason for the cap is to limit the rich teams from "buying" all the best players. The reason the players association agreed to it was to ensure they had a place to play next year. Oh, and to get back from the lock-out.

Cap keeps going up because Canadian dollar rises, all contracts paid in US dollars, Canadian teams sold out attendance and other revenues, plus a few northern US teams drive the yearly increase in overall league revenue, thus the cap rises.

both good points...but honestly pointless.

Many of the American players would never play in Russia...and probably some of the Canadian ones...just for their own personal reasons.

And the cap again should be in place to allow all the teams in the league the opportunity of an "even playing field".

NOBODY wants to watch blowout games of 10-1 or 15-1...it's boring...it's dull...and that's what happens when there's a team that's been "bought".

Save the glory players for the All-Star game.

And any cap should be adjusted per exchange rates when crossing the border.

I don't feel like looking it up...but how many teams don't spend the "cap" now?
And how well are they doing in the league?
Are the ones spending the most dominating the league?
Are the ones spending multi-millions on one player slaughtering every other team?

Quite honestly...if I was an owner and I spent $100M on a player...he better get a MINIMUM of 3 goals per game...NO EXCEPTIONS or I would demand money back...and don't miss a game, or I'd deduct that amount out of the salary too.

In the old days, the NHL was famous for having big businessmen buying out all the best players, just to be able to win the Stanley Cup.
I do agree though, put a tight cap on right now, or else the league will implode.
The players should give some of that money to the elderly. That would be a good deed. They should also help teens who want a chance to become professionals, but can't because their parents just get a minimum wage to carry on, and can't afford the cost to get their kids through a decent hockey program.

Maybe we should just come up with a universal way of rating all players.

A league commissioner could assign each player to the team he feels is best based on a "cap" of talent rating. Anytime someone starts doing better they are automatically re-evaluated and perhaps assigned to a different team.

Yeah. that just seems perfectly fine.

AGEsAces

AGEsAces

Actually...why not just have a random draw?

Each team gets to pick 5 players (1 line) from their current lineup.

All other players go into a "hat" based on position (all forwards in one, defense in another, goalies in another)

Then the teams draw players and they get whatever comes out.

Salaries fixed based upon position and years of playing and paid by the league, not the team.

Teams have to pay the league a certain amount every year to cover the players' salaries, etc.

Every year, each team gets to pick 5 again from their existing roster.

(or, if someone wants that "player/mentor/hero" feeling...the draw could be every 3 years)
