http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Peter-Tessier/THE-MOTHER-OF-ALL-RUMOURS/119/26296

February 13, 2010, 6:54 PM ET
This started with a post by Scott Taylor of Winnipeg radio station 92
CITI FM and also of the National Post. In his post on the station's
website he claims that David Thompson, son of Ken Thompson and
controlling shareholder in Thompson Reuters has purchased the Atlanta
Thrashers and is moving it to Winnipeg for the 2010-11 Season. This is
to be announced after the Olympics.

Okay now that you are all agog, the shock is settling in and the
countless theories of why this will or will not work are being
formulated... that's just the beginning.

The Manitoba Moose, farm team for Vancouver will be moving to Saskatoon
and the Saskatoon Blades WHL team will moving to Winnipeg.

So it gets better...

The Phoenix Coyotes will be moving to Kansas City. The NHL has
apparently brokered a deal for the Coyotes to move to Kansas City. This
is the crazy one. How did this happen with the iron clad lease and the
wonderful relationship with the City of Glendale?

I may be some one who loves to drink but I'm not even close to a bottle
right now so don't tell me to put it down.

I think it's all crazy. I know Mark Chipman, owner of the Moose, has
been working hand in hand with the NHL to build a situation where the
league feels everything is in place to support a team in the 'new NHL'
but this fast?

I'm putting this out there as the story is gaining some strength and it
might as well get discussed, laughed at or be investigated further.

Have fun with this one!

The follow up to this is that the National Leasing sale to Canadian Western Bank was finalized last week.

Chipman was majority shareholder of national leasing group and this apparently frees up cash to purchase the thrashers.

All rumors of course. Have to wait until after the Olympics to see.

Of course, if this does get pulled together, Chipman will be hailed as a god in Winnipeg.

And.......

What would this do to Asper's deal for the Bombers? Since this deal appears to be private funded, what would happen to support for Asper's heavily publicly funded Bomber deal?

Next to Winnipeg getting the Thrashers, my next favorite part is the backdooring of Phoenix out of the NHL, as it should be NHL Rumours... The NHL is returning to Winnipeg - Page 7 Icon_cheers

Imo, he'd be an idiot to sell NL in order to buy a hockey team. Most hockey teams are money-losing ventures that require very deep pockets to finance them. Winnipeg would be considered doubtful as a money-maker imo.

Hopefully, bring some people out of the ether.

I agree. National Leasing is reportedly a very successful company.

The very best an NHL team could do in Winnipeg is break even. Well, with a 15k seat arena anyway.

That said an additional 3,000 seats would be nice they would not be a huge addition to the bottom lines as they'd be the cheapest seats available. But every little bit helps...

There's a lot of NHL teams that are bleeding their owners, but the owners' egos make them stay in the game. imo anyway.

What deal are you referring to Pav? This NHL deal has NOTHING, I repeat, NOTHING to do with the Aspers. So please, go and take your beef with the Aspers to the appropriate threads, as this one has NOTHING to do with the Aspers.

This deal reeked of back room and still doe,s Leo would have shovels in the ground by now not playing games and we might still have control of the team . The obvious slant towards his friends is pretty open to see , Shindico and the arena property is also on the funny side no tender or competitive bids , very quiet. These were two of the most wanted properties in the city.
Saying that I hope it works for the new team just hope all you so called fans put your money into season tickets as that is what pays the bills for whom ever

Geeze I dislike this comment. I am a fan. I will spend what I can afford. If I can't afford to spend one dime on a new NHL team that does not make me a lesser fan or a "so called fan".

Seirously dude. Enough is enough. Please take my (and GOMs) advice and go and b1tch about the Aspers on another thread. You are being a complete troll on this one.

Dude have you no memory of the empty seats at the arena many nights , how often people cried over the cost of going . Would rather seat in the bar and watch on TV . People whine now over the cost of a Moose game and the price of beer . The NHL is great but it is very costly especially when our dollar takes a dive .

Yes things are better since this version would control the concessions but people have to go to the games and on average more then once or twice . Not that you are less Grumpy but you know what I mean Fannies in the seats pay the bills Beer in the belly pays more . As a Bomber Season ticket holder of 20 yrs I stand by it

The new team will need a sold out arena every night. The minute that changes the team is at risk.

Isn't the MTS Center successful because of all the various shows, besides hockey, that are put on there?

If hockey replaced some of the other shows, would it continue to be so successful?

....somehow I doubt it....the dynamics would change completely.

Your assumption is false. The MTS Center houses a professional hockey team which plays approx the same number of games as an NHL team. The only change might be to the start and end dates of the season and I think that would be negligible.

You might have a point if the Moose played an abbreviated (e.g. 20 home game) schedule.

I didn't know that. I thought that they played many more games....maybe that's including the Play-offs, which we wouldn't have to worry about eh.

I'm pretty sure it's the same number of regular season games ( give or take one or two).

I think the training camp starts later for the moose, and the season finishes later ( although I may be mistaken), so it would essentially be just a season shift ( same length, but earlier start and finish)

The Meese play roughly the same schedule. But to save cost's they often play several games in a row. That would change somewhat for the new NHL team.

He is actually correct.
The dynamics will change.
The number 1 dynamic is the average cost per ticket in the AHL and the NHL is very different.
And that is where the rubber hits the road.
Just because a person has season tickets to the Moose does not mean that same person will have season tickets to see the NHL.

And they are getting about 8,000 customers on any given night to watch the Moose.
That is a long way from the 15,000 they will need for an NHL team.
And people can say what they want about the Commissioner of the NHL. But he knows how to count butts in the seats.
And PAYING butts in the seats is needed to pay $57,000,000 in annual NHL salaries.

And if you think a NHL team in Winnipeg will have much less than a $57,000,000 team salary, you are kidding yourself.
Winnipeggers will not support a team which is not competitive.

And I am pretty sure NHL players are paid in US dollars.
Which is not too bad right now.
But if or when Canada goes to a $.70 dollar, a Winnipeg NHL team might be in trouble.
