Oh, I have no problem with a collection plate, but it seems kind of strange that in a church ( a place that where you think the attendees would not steal), the collection plate was attached to a long stick as opposed to being passed from person to person.

That was just used to speed the process up, and had nothing to do wityh not trusting the congregation.

Anyway, your interpretation of "the stick" (a long handle) is a stretch to begin with.imo

the long stick is not to stop stealing.. the long stick is to monitor who donates Church - Page 2 Icon_wink

ie if they just had people standing at the end of each isle watching the plate people would feel uncomfortable. However if you attach a stick to the plate.. it seems less like you are being monitored Smile and more like they are doing it to make the plate easier to "move"

Well, it looked like a broom handle to me (not decorated or ornamental at all)

A young priest is unhappy with how little money his congregation contributes every week to the collection plate. So decides to try a new tack and hypnotize them, using Father Matthews' priceless pocket watch. Thus hypnotized, they all give the five bucks he asked them too. Pumped by his success, he ups the amount to $10 the next week. Amazingly, everybody gives ten bucks each. The week after that, he decides to up it to twenty bucks, but just as he's about to announce the amount, he drops the watch.
"Shit!"

It took the workers two weeks to clean up the church.

I don't know if I agree with that. The parish I go to , the sidesgreeter hands the plate at one pew and then collects it at the pew behind, then repeats the process. Never made me feel uncomfortable.

now that you realize the guy is actually there to monitor you.... does it make you feel uncomfortable now? Or does it make you feel proud that you can donate?

We had church ushers that did collection, seated late commers and acted as bouncers for the alterboys' antics (joke).
Ya see, in the catholic service, there was a lot of "get up-sit down-kneel down" stuff that you had to hurry through the collection so as to catch everyone sitting down. Simple solution. Get the ushers to collect. Fast and efficient as compared to each person passing it around.

Make me feel uncomfortable? not at all, especially considering a) most donations are made in a donation envelope with no dollar figure on it, so no difference between $5 and $50. and b) there are a lot of parishes that do eft as a donation method, so someone not putting $$ in the plate could just as easily mean they gave on-line or only give monthly.

I think that at one hand it may have been 'monitoring', but it surely isn't now.

That stick is probably because they had a situation at one time where someone spilled the plate.
Maybe a kid grabbed it, or a senior dropped it.

It also might be so the plate gets back to the correct collection person, and so the pastor can see where the plate is at all times, instead of trying to guess to estimate when he can start preaching again.

Depends what are you are in. When I did goto Church a few years ago, Pastor Gerry Michalski was a really good pastor who started his own church, Soul Sanctuary in 2003. It's in Fort Garry off Chevrier Blvd..

That's the way to go. Start your own church. The tax advantages alone, are worth it. Wink

There is a young Minister at a very small Baptist Church in East Kildonan, that I have attended twice on Sunday at 10:30 A.M. They have a 2nd service later , I am not sure what time. I enjoyed the hugs and the incredible friendliness. They take a collection , which is their only income, and because of the small number of parishners, it is extremely friendly.
I am not looking to change religions, but enjoyed going there. The church number is 889 2862 for the address.

Exactly. Because some congregations are so big, either a stick is used or members just pass the plate around. It really isn't a big deal. And as a Ukrainian Catholic, I have never been pressured in either of my Churches in Winnipeg or Edmonton to donate. You can when you can, and when you can't you don't. That's it. No questions asked and not wanting to know anything about your taxes. That is rediculous and I would never devulge that information.

My suggestion for you GC is to check out a Baptist church. I have been to several in Canada and the US, and I do enjoy their masses as they use many kinds of instruments and lots of fun singing to get the crowds motivated and have fun. Very family friendly from what I've seen. I think you and your family would very much enjoy it.

An old friend of mine is the pastor at St. Benedict's Table, at Osborn and Broadway. I'd recommend checking them out as well!
