Gives me chills just thinking about it.

Panic is the great killer. If one waits for the pressure to equalize the doors will open. It is sad and tragic that these deaths could have been avoided but then again, how many folks would care to know how to get out of a vehicle that is becoming submerged? Or would they believe that they need to know?

cant remember which network.. I think SPike TV has a series of how to survive disaster.. and cars plunging into water is one of them.

mind you Our drivers Education class also had this information... not sure if they still cover that.. or if just because it was up north that our covered it.

Okay JTF I ask you this, when was the last time you were in a confined space, likely tethered (the seatbelts in this case) with two other persons who were most likely screaming and clawing etc...? That was why in Diver Rescue we had to pass the "drowning/panicking person scenario.....a person who is in an absolute state of panic gets this surge of adrenaline that creates its own set of issues. A surge of adrenaline can cause one to mimic what would be considered strength beyond their usual means or it can cause one to freeze......

the cold water factor also causes some severe problems with likelyhood of proper reaction.

They have done some very interesting studies on this and trained professionals would often " freeze" as well. Its not nearly as simple as you think.

and yes I have had a friend die from this. We all started carrying a knife close to the seatbelts after that, when in reality the seatbelt was not the problem.. the guy just froze and never even tried to undue his seatbelt.

I have participated in cold water and oceanic rescues.....it is not fun, it is dangerous as hell and having once driven my car into water, the Higgins and Annabella underpass which had flash-flooded during a heavy bout of rain and my vision was obscured due to the downpour and thus could not see that the water had risen? I was lucky in that Hondas float for awhile.....most cars will float for a short time, long enough as in my case to roll down the window and climb out......to this day that car is still in operation but that is another story.

The vehicle that these women were in - a Grand Cherokee, I assume a four door vehicle with possibly those stupid-assed automatic locks???? That could very well be part and parcel of a botched escape.....as well the child protection locks in the back passenger area......too many damned locks and the automatic functions have been know to lock up at the best of times and not work in optimum conditions.

You should have seen the idiot on CNN Headline news and her team of "professionals" discussing this event before the girls were found. It was the most asinine male bashing session I have ever witnessed. This bimbos assumed some male pervert had grabbed these three girls and were inventing all kinds of fear-mongering.

Un-freaking-believable.

My new car and my old one both had auto lock/unlock functions. They are easy to disable, not much more difficult than setting the clock. It's all in the owner's manual.

I think those "child safety locks" which when engaged prevent someone from opening the back doors (locked or unlocked) are one of the more stupid inventions. SURE... they are supposed to disengage if in an accident... But its one thing I just never want to find out that they dont work.

Glad you agree about the child safety locks.....I have never been able to disengage them on the one car I borrow so it can be a real pain loading and unloading crap from the back seat. A Grand Cherokee methinks would have all the bells and whistles, thus my thinking about those damned locks......If I cannot disengage that lock in the parking lot at Costco then how would one be able to disengage in a state of panic?
