I think that city is pushing 50k population nowadays. I imagine they'd have 25-30 streets by now...

...and probably as many avenues.

...it's funny that they were not closed.

Quite a bit of area being evacuated. Lots of businesses on 18th, which is the major north south artery is also PTH 10. Funny, they just built a new firehall and its in the evacuation area. Theres a new shopping centre, WalMart, Home Depot, etc is at the intersection of 18th where Grand Valley drive intersect. Some of those stores are very concerned, as they are currenlty being protected by a double high sandbag dike. Thats enough to make anyone nervous.

On the train to Brandon yesterday and saw first had how bad it is. Quite scary, on both sides of the track there is what looks like a lake, with back hoes desperately trying to build up a dike along the tracks. Also have seen a few houses surrounded by water with just a small sandbag dike keeping the water at bay. The train bridge over the Assiniboine entering Brandon yard usually has about a 10 to 12 foot drop to the water, now its about 4 inches....a little unnerving going over it with a 10,000 foot train!

say,,,

there is a crazy amount of large hauling trucks going into the cement plant on Route 90 today. I glanced over to see what was going on and it almost looked like they were being filled with sand or sandbags? this make sense?

Yes, that plant has a sandbag machine. Volunteers were asked to go there to help fill sandbags a few weeks ago,

Also saw the military in Portage but not in Brandon yet. There is also a bridge that goes over a part of the Portage diversion,I have never in my life seen so much rushing water i,t was spilling over the cement sides and flooding there as well. It's really hard for me to describe the volume or amount of water rushing through that diversion.

yeah it was like 10-20 trucks lined up and more pulling up and they were lined out all the way into the yard and along the road as well.

I was at the outlet of the Floodway outside Lockport back in '96. Standing 30 feet away from the concrete outlet, the ground shook from the force that was going through there.

I've got some photos somewhere. I'll see if I can find them.

I imagine the federal government is paying all the Brandon evacuees to stay in Winnipeg hotels.

Why the Feds and not Manitoba? Selinger called it and caused it probably.

It was sarcasm. Note who seem to be the onliest peeps staying in hotels when evacuated. The feds pay for that...

I would have loved to take some photo's or even video, but I would get fired for using my cell while on duty If I got caught.

OK, so I'm no expert on water, rivers and flooding, but I'm trying to figure this out, so indulge me a minute.

The Red and Assiniboine have crested in Winnipeg already, but thanks to that miracle of modern engineering, Duff's Ditch, the City was spared.

As reported, flooding along the Assiniboine back to Brandon and farther, is reported to be a one in 300 year event.

The Portage diversion is at or above capacity.

They are preparing to divert some of the flow from the Assiniboine, overland to the LaSalle.

Both the Assiniboine and the Lasalle flow into the Red in Winnipeg, both after the Floodway gates.

So, isn't all that water coming here and going to end up in the Red but beyond the protection of the Floodway? What is the impact of that?

two foot rise in the red according to the article I read on it.

The theory behind it is that the floodway under operation has added extra capacity to the Red inside the Floodway protection area...so the Red should be able to accept the extra water with minimal impact within the protection area.

OK, makes sense. But I guess if the timing were different, like all that water hitting about the same time as the crest of the Red, things could be different.

Time to thank Duff Roblin once again.
