This is the place to post about Manitoba's favorite Junior Hockey team - The BRANDON WHEAT KINGS!!!

Aside from the fact that Brandon is 3 hours away from Winnipeg, as it is the closest place to watch exciting CHL hockey. I support the Brandon Wheat kings in their bid for the 2010 Memorial Cup!

Brandon Wheat Kings defeat Prince Albert Raiders 5-2

Canadian Press

PRINCE ALBERT, Sask. - The Brandon Wheat Kings are beginning to look more and more like Memorial Cup hosts.

Two nights after a 7-2 win over the mighty Saskatoon Blades, the Wheat Kings pulled into Prince Albert on Friday and defeated the Raiders 5-2 in Western Hockey League action. The Wheat Kings (19-11-2) did it the hard way, bouncing back from a 2-0 deficit to hand the Raiders (16-11-3) their first loss in five games.

Aaron Lewadniuk scored two goals and set up another as the Wheat Kings beat the Raiders for the first time in three tries this season. Defenceman Colby Robak added three assists. Toni Rajala, Jay Fehr and Scott Glennie also scored for Brandon, which buried four second-period goals to go ahead 5-2.

Colin Reddin and Craig McCallum scored for the Raiders, whose 2-0 lead lasted for less than a minute late in the first period.

Prince Albert managed to hold Wheat Kings captain Brayden Schenn to one assist. The first-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings had his share of chances, but Garrett Zemlak held him off the scoreboard.

Jacob DeSerres made 35 saves for Brandon, while Zemlak stopped 37 shots in defeat.

Six different players score as Brandon Wheat Kings rock Regina Pats 6-4

The Brandon Wheat Kings "March to the Memorial Cup" Thread 2N4C0052

(CP) – 23 hours ago

REGINA — The Brandon Wheat Kings had goals from six different players to rock the Regina Pats 6-4 in the Western Hockey League Saturday night.

Brenden Walker, Mark Stone, Jordan DePape, Brayden Schenn, Matt Calvert, and Aaron Lewadniuk all scored for Brandon (20-11-2), which has won seven of its last eight.

Jordan Eberle had a late hat trick for Regina (15-14-3), while Hampus Gustafsson added a single.

Lewadniuk got things started for Brandon with a power play goal midway through the first. Setting up the goal with a great backdoor feed was Toni Rajala, who will be attending the Finish World Junior Team Selection camp in Calgary later this month.

Just over three minutes later DePape made it 2-0 when he snuck behind both Regina's defencemen, took a pass from Stone then beat Damien Ketlo for his third goal of the season.

In the second Brandon exploded for four goals, the first of which came on the power play when Schenn made a great feed from the halfboards and through a crowd right on the tape of Urbom at the goalmouth for an easy tip in. Schenn, along with Scott Glennie, will be back in Regina next week to attend the Canadian World Junior Team Selection camp along with Pats Eberle and Colten Teubert.

Also scoring in the second for Brandon was Stone with a five-hole wrister, Calvert with pretty partial breakaway goal and Walker with a tip in to make it 6-0.

With less than a minute left in the frame Regina's Jordan Eberle gave the 4,469 in attendance some consolation when he blocked a point shot at his own blue line, grabbed the loose puck at centre ice and scored on a breakaway with a pretty backhanded deke.

Regina added three more in the third-one from Gustaffson and two from Eberle, one of which was shorthanded-but ran out of time before Eberle could do any more damage.

Brandon goalie Andrew Hayes (13-8-1) was solid in net, making 38 saves in the win. Taking the loss for Regina was Damien Ketlo (10-9-2), who let in four goal on 17 shots before he was replaced by Dawson Guhle (5-5-1).

Just a quick update for all of you Junior Hcokey fans:

Brandon visits the first place Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday. This game will be a gigantic test for the Wheaties. Brandon will then return home for a couple of games against inferior teams (Edmonton and Kelowna), which they should pull off wins.

My Prediction for the week:

SASKATOON defeats BRANDON
BRANDON defeats KELOWNA
BRANDON defeats EDMONTON

Well I was pleasantly mistaken. Brandon 5 Saskatoon 4! :party 003:

Schenn's overtime winner leads Brandon to 5-4 victory over Saskatoon
(CP) – 2 days ago

SASKATOON — Brayden Schenn scored 2:03 into overtime as the Brandon Wheat Kings overcame a third-period collapse to earn a 5-4 win over the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday night in the WHL.

Schenn's 14th goal - and team-leading 48th point - helped salvage two points for the Wheat Kings (21-11-2), who squandered a 4-0 second-period lead. Matt Calvert led the way with a first-period natural hat trick, while Mark Schneider had a single and Schenn added two assists.

Braeden Johnson, Tyler Kiziuk, Burke Gallimore and Charles Inglis replied for the Blades (21-6-4), who scored once in the second period and three more times in the third to force extra time.

Jacob DeSerres earned the win in relief of Andrew Hayes, who was pulled early in the third period after allowing Saskatoon's third goal. DeSerres stopped eight shots.

Steven Stanford made 21 saves in defeat for the Blades.

Wheat Kings Win 8th Straight

The Brandon Wheat Kings "March to the Memorial Cup" Thread Stone11

Wheat King player Mark Stone

http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3942900

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings brought the curtain down on their pre-Christmas schedule Saturday night with a convincing 8-2 victory over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors to complete a sweep of their home and home weekend series sweep.
The Wheat Kings, who beat the Warriors 4-1 in Moose Jaw on Friday night, extended their winning streak to eight and enter the weeklong Christmas break sitting tied atop the Western Hockey League's Eastern Division with the Saskatoon Blades.

The Blades rebounded from Friday's loss in Prince Albert to beat the Raiders 5-2 on Saturday.

20-year old Aaron Lewadniuk and 17-year old Mark Stone both had their first WHL hat tricks as the Wheat Kings won for the 12th time in the past thirteen games.

"Wiebe and Calvert made great plays on all three of the goals and I just had to have my stick on the ice and tap them in," Stone told Bruce Luebke on CKLQ's post-game show. "I like to go to the front of the net and get those easy goals. There's something better than scoring a nice, easy, greasy goal."

Colby Robak and Michael Ferland also scored for the Wheat Kings while Toni Rajala and newly acquired Shayne Wiebe added three assists apiece. For Wiebe, Saturday night's game marked his Wheat King debut at Westman Place.

Quinton Howden scored both goals for Moose Jaw, who trailed 3-0 and 4-1 at the period breaks.

"It's always good to have success," Stone went on to say. "We always want to have W's going into the Christmas break and always a great feeling to know you have momentum and keep it coming with a big second half."

Brandon enters the Christmas break with an impressive 25-11-0-2 record, good for 52 points, which leaves them two points behind Calgary in the battle for top spot in the Eastern Conference.

The win marked another "Smittys Lucky 7 Night" as well over 4,700 fans went home with a free breakfast, courtesy of Brandon's two Smittys Restaurants. Those fans will now have a week to take advantage of a Wheat Kings' 2+2+2 Breakfast, thanks to Brandon's 8-goal outburst on Saturday night.

The Wheat Kings are now idle until December 28th when they travel to Swift Current to meet the Broncos. Brandon's next home game is Saturday, January 2nd when the Prince Albert Raiders come to town

Wheaties acquire Hamonic

The Brandon Wheat Kings "March to the Memorial Cup" Thread Reu24V_WORLD_JUNIOR

The Brandon Wheat Kings have acquired defenceman Travis Hamonic from the Moose Jaw Warriors for their Memorial Cup run.

The Wheat Kings, who will host the Canadian Hockey League championship in late May, sent defenceman Dallas Ehrhardt, a 2010 first-round pick and two second-round selections to the Warriors as compensation.

Hamonic, who hails from St. Malo and was a second-round draft pick of the New York Islanders in 2008, is out six to eight weeks after tearing three ligaments in his shoulder last week while playing for Canada in the world junior hockey championship in Saskatoon.

The 19-year-old had 10 goals and 29 assists in 31 games with the Warriors this season.

-----

Looks like the Wheaties are going all out to try an capture the Memorial cup. If you recall, Hamonic was a key player in the World Junior turney for Canada. He was injured by a Swiss player in the semi-final game, and that could have been a key reason Canada lost to the US in the finals.

He is expected to return in early February. The Wheaties can use him, as they have been in a slump since Christmas break.

I watched the Memorial cup from the get-go. I thought the Brandon coach was a nut-bar when he started his back-up goalie in the first game versus Windsor. The result was predictable.

Then Brandon kicked Moncton's butt. I thought maybe McCrimmon was playing possum in game one after this performance.

They then lost 5-1 to Calgary. Hmmmm. I thought playing possum again? And Brandon promptly went out and beat Calgary and won entry into the Memorial Cup final.

How will Brandon fare? Anyone think Windsor will win by a similar 9-3 score?

I don't. Not sure they can win though... Windsor. By two goals.

I remember Brandon doing extremely well back in the late 70's with talents like Brian Propp and Ray Allison in their lineup.

Yikes. More of the same. Windsor is head and shoulders a better team.
