It seems the friends of the museum have FINALLY admitted that getting more from the government is out and they will be going after private funds...

National fundraising was always part of their MO deank. I think they may have finally admitted their cost estimates may not have been realistic.

no no.. Thats not what I am getting at.

For the year they have kept their target at the 150.. even when they knew outright that they needed millions more. They are finally it seems able to ADMIT that the government coffers are empty and they must seek private funds.

Thats a shiattonne extra of money they are now asking for that will be nigh on impossible. Its time for the current board to admit failure and bring in new blood.

The board should have been dissolved months ago when this all first came to light.

The whole project should be shelved. Or at least Gail should be honest and admit the project is a publicly funded holocaust museum. CMHR my a$$. the ONLY reason there will be temporary exhibits on anything but the holocaust is to leverage tax dollars.

Between this, the stadium and the upper fort garry debacle, I'm completely disgusted at the corporate welfare state and pandering to 'Gordo's rich friends' that all levels of government are doing.

That is what Manitoba has evolved into. Once Manitoba governments started down the path of handouts to every second venture a culture of gimmee-gimmee was born.

It reminds me of another pernicious gimmee-gimmee culture that won't go away any time soon.

I wonder, would admission this is a Holocaust museum make any difference to anyone?

Lastly, if they halted completion of this building now, what would happen to the monies donated? Would they be returned if the donators (word?) did not agree with the new purpose?

"I wonder, would admission this is a Holocaust museum make any difference to anyone?"

Owning up to a lie is a pretty big part of being a grown up. Not lieing would be better. But owning up, helps.

eh...at this point...the museum WILL finish...and open to the public...whether the money is there or not.

they aren't going to build that much of a building and just quit.

it will just be a matter of time before some big benefactor steps up and offers the money they are looking for..in exchange for something...but it will happen.

Love the revisionist history. Original opening was Spring 2012, Not 2013.

Now they want to go from 130M all the way to 200M so that they can open by 2014.... "gotta put our foot on the gas pedal"..... right Gail?

In 2011 they managed to raise 5M...... even at double the pace it will still take 5 - 7 years to reach 200M.

full globe & mail article here... the WFP left allot out

cue the next black rod article lol!

This is probably full-on damage control... Something the WPS desperately needs.

If the government taxpayers returned the donated money back the non-government doners, would the government taxpayers be further ahead in the long run?
Ie: how many years before the government taxpayers broke even on the expenses.

so Gail travelled to Toronto to present to current supporters eh? How much was spent to do that? Did they all stand up and give her more money?

its also VERY interesting that apparently they are including the Gov of MB and city of Winnipeg contributions in the part of the amount they raised from donations. Makes it seems like there is more public backing then there is.

Do you mean the money from the governments of MB and city are included as part of the $130 million figure which I thought was private money?

For full clarity Dean, included in the $130 million posed as private donations, are all provincial and municipal monies?

Or, are you referring to "donations" made by crown corporations?

Here is what the G & M wrote:
To date, the museum has raised just over $130-million, in addition to the $100-million promised by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who announced in 2007 that he was establishing the CMHR as the country’s first-ever cultural Crown corporation outside the Ottawa region, and a combined $63.6-million from the Manitoba and Winnipeg governments.

1) 100M from the Feds (not including annual operating expenses) -- last payment already received by CMHR

2) 40M from the province (original promised contribution - already spent)

3) 20M from the city (original promised contribution - already spent)

4) 3.6M from the city - waived property taxes... seems the city has no use for 3.6M

5) 130M in "private" donations... yes.. crown corporation donations were considered "private".LOL

how Ms. Asper plans to raise another 70M or so in private donations so the museum can open by 2014 would be pulling a monster rabbit out of a very teeny tiny hat.

I'm thinking Dean.K has a better chance of running a full marathon in 2 hours flat while juggling 3 chain saws and a rabid poodle...... (no offense my good man)

I think Ms. Asper has one hell of a challenge in front of her also. I wonder if anyone would have believed they would of raised $130 million 5 years ago?
