all these people going oh noes... those poor people look at them living in tents with no running water ( okay lets ignore that is their tradition for this argument )

anyway.. the government of course is more then a little pissed off that this is happening especially since it was mostly being done to make them look bad...

AND I totally agree with their response.

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/opposition-says-harper-should-visit-troubled-northern-ontario-reserve-134766063.html

as in.. EXCUSE ME??? where the hell has the $90 million we gave you over the last 5 years gone?????

I hope some of the people involved in doing this to their people are arrested and thrown in jail.

I would say that an audit is prudent.

The individuals that are relying on the Band Council to make decisions for them are screwed by corruption etc.
Those responsible for frittering away the money should pay dearly.

That said, the feds will audit ME as an individual if they suspect I'm trying to push through an extra semester of tuition and make me pro-rate it over the course of the next year and nail ME for it, to the tune of $90. Not ninety million. Why so long to step in and ask "WTF?"

The number of reserves under 3rd party management is dumbfounding, there has been a concerted effort by the conservatives to get them off 3rd party management so, sometimes (especially when the actual residents are not complaining to them) to the gov... no news is good news.

And naturally, the response is that the 90 million number is misleading, as it goes towards education, etc.

the 90 million is misleading as thats only money that they get from the feds.

I've lived on a rez in ON that had recently been handed over to 3rd party mgt and a new(ish) band council. The abuse of funding by the previous band leadership was apparent every time you drove through town:98% of people living in derelict shanty housing, and 2% of them living in massive, new, sprawling digs. The 2% was the corrupt former leaders and their direct kin. It was disturbing. Yet, who was going to stop them? Outside of people who "belonged" there, there were only teachers at the school, nurses at the station, pilots for charter companies, a few hydro folks, Old Order Mennonite missionaries and Nor'West Co. people.

The last 3 years in this holiday haven area, has been under shared management!

If anyone bothers to do the math, you would find that the government spends appx $8000 per year per person on average throughout Canada and on this reserve.

The problem, I believe, is $8000 to cover the costs of housing, education, fly in costs is 1/3th what is needed.

Why houses on reservations are built so poor is a real question mark!

Why there is not enough money, we need more resources, is what every damn group , every level of government agency tells us!

Stuff it!

Rosie. ...even a Tuxedo-like built house won't last long when you are tearing it down for firewood.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that the $90,000,000 has been spent largely on the chief, and his family and friends. Something really doesn't add up here.

I dont understand....aren;t Most of these remote reserves in Northern Boreal forest?

so....why are they flying in expensive "modern" building materials when they have a virtually limitless supply of logs for log homes or for turning into lumber?

Wouldnt that make more sense? Buy a lumber mill and mill there own lumber?

I worked on a portable lumber mill, in one week me and 5 other guys turned out 3 semis full of lumber ranging in size from 2x4 to 20X20.

YES, somethings would still have to be shipped in, but using logs or site milled lumber would save a huge chunk of money.

Excellent idea DeanK! Is there any skill required to building a log cabin?

A basic one can be built by pretty much anyone. A more modern one takes more work, but once you get the hang of it, again its fairly simple and can be very elegant.

That's called ingenuity... Something that seems to be lacking in some of these communities. It is easier to b1tch and complain, than stand on their own feet and prosper.

Not to mention the huge sums of money being loaded into the community from the neighboring DIAMOND mine...

Again something doesn't add up, somewhere someone is making a ton of money. These people need the tools to prosper, not handouts.

I think that the actual population may be more around 1200. I guess they don't have much else to do but sit around and be important.

This reserve is at the end of an iceroad yet want city services? Move to the city!!

If we build and put them up in houses, does that mean they can say later we took away their heritage?

When
I was outwest I lived AND WORKED while living in a tent for five months
October thru March by then I saved up enough for an apartment, down
payment and job in Victoria carried me the rest, how is this lost of
these people? I had no vehicle, flat screen tv or family there for
support.

If they really want to live out in the middle of
nowhere, insulate the teepee and dont dump the feces in the basement or
ten feet from the door. Tent living is really not that difficult unless
you have the highest of standards and need a home on shorehill drive.

And nowhere on those audits did I see money contributed by its own citizens, what are they contributing?

What is the government money supposed to cover?

This is a fly in reservation, isn't it?

I have spent the last 30 minutes just wandering through the audited statements.

This is a very big company, managing a huge sollar amount. In 2005 there was $25,000,000 in business carried out.

Anything and everythig is in the statements, and the accounting firm has , over the years, been making suggestions on how to imorove the records.

CBC news has a bimbo reporting from the reservation, and she was showed a furnace room that had a sewage back-up in 2009, and it hasn't been cleaned yet by Mr. harper!

Can anyone imagine the stupid reporter not asking the person who showed her the dirty feces, and not asking why haven't you cleaned this mess?

Does anyone in this area expect the government to send in someone to clean?
