What struck me was the Birdtail Sioux First Nation used theirs to build a new general store and gas bar. Is this the first such store/gas bar on the reserve?
By THE CANADIAN PRESS
BRANDON -- Oil and gas pipeline giant Enbridge Inc. has given $100,000 to each of Manitoba's five Dakota First Nations.

Indications are the money, which the bands received late last year, is an extension of a memorandum of understanding signed in 2007 over pipeline construction.

"I can confirm we provided $500,000 for investment in their communities," said Enbridge spokeswoman Anne McIntosh.

The money has already gone to good use, said Chief Ken Chalmers of the Birdtail Sioux First Nation.

His people's share of the money has gone toward the construction of a new general store and gas bar, he said. "We just poured the cement before the holidays. It's a great big store, which will give my people the benefits of cheaper food and groceries."

The Dakota are one of five aboriginal groups across the western provinces negotiating with Enbridge over employment and training opportunities, as well as community investment funding.

I dont know if its the first, but I do fail to understand how this will give them the benefit of cheaper food. Maybe because of less travel time to brandon? But the band is going to have some trouble beating superstore prices for most items.

Not sure of what is around them, but if they can keep some of their own $$ by buying goods from themselves and even draw some of the surrounding community in, then thats the start of economic growth. Its also an opportunity for employment, albeit on a small scale. I give them credit for doing something positive. Start small and see what happens. Better than another fricking casino in the middle of nowhere.

Yea if Nelson would take the hint he is expecting his verdict against the goverment today or shortly , over this pipeline . Wants to be consulted before the goverment gives the okay in the future , to cross reserve land and of course a cut .

Some day Terry Nelson is going to get a grip the handouts are or have come to an end. The pipe line is on hold till this is settled or they find a way around their land . O well America doe.s not need their gas or ours I guess.

Thing is the pipeline payments he is seeking are NOT for crossing a reserve (or reserves) but for crossing their "traditional" hunting grounds. The property either belongs in private hands or is crown lands.
