"About 100 people demonstrated outside the downtown Winnipeg office of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada on Friday, demanding improvements to education funding on reserves.

The event, organized by the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, was intended to draw attention to the plight of education on First Nations reserves in the province."

I wonder who pre-printed up those signs?

From what I recall of my school years playing sports, FN schools were usually the most modern and well funded schools we went to. If the students at those schools didn't trash them at every available opportunity, the schools would stay that way.

No suggestions for a solution. Nothing offered in the form of cooperative solution. Just complaining for more money. Its so tiring.

It is very sad, the Indians got these pristine land reserves to call their own as a community, and all they do is run their assets into the ground. It is a shame that they have no pride of community and ownership.

We should relax.

This is just one of the six regularly scheduled events the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs plans each year to keep their face in the media to garner a bit of relevance.

Plus, it's a really good excuse to get to the Peg for a shopping experience.

The elementary school in Oxford House...has been closed since Jan. 21 because of health dangers, including black mould.

Authorities shut the doors after students, for weeks, complained of bad coughs, rashes, headaches and nausea.

There were also structural issues, such as a sagging roof.

It appears that these buildings were of sub-standard construction.

That is an issue that should be looked into.

any wooden roof will start to sag if mold and moisture has been left as an issue long enough

thats not substandard construction, thats substandard maintenance.

nope.

If the building was properly designed and/or built, the moisture situation would have been considered and designed for.

trust me. it was. Problem is they are using designs that apply to people who maintain their buildings and follow "normal" behaviour.

Lets ignore these particular schools.

Lets take the house you are living in. All good right?

okay.. now wash clothes and hang them to dry in the house. Got a dryer? Vent it back into the house. Cold air intake? close that off. Dehumidifier? turn it off to save energy because it feels warmer when there is more humidity.

After living in a few places in Northern MB and Northern ON, I can say with relative confidence that the schools are often better (constructed, funded) than ones our kids are getting down here in WhiteyLand. We contend with a lot of unsafe shitheaps here (here being Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto) - usually due to age, not willful neglect.

If the roof sheeting is warping, I'd say a design problem was evident. Venting isn't a maintenance issue, it's a design issue.

Btw, this is a school.

Low bid, improper inspections, payoffs to the white guys.

Mike Holmes is getting involved to inspect aboriginal buildings in Ontario, so we know things will move in the right direction, finally after over a 100 years of this crap.

JTF I know its a school. The same types of issues happen in the schools. Small problem creeps up, nothing is done about it and it grows and grows.

The conditions of first nations schools is due to the local band not spending the money needed to maintain them.

My dad worked for an engineering firm that CONSTANTLY was doing work for schools where simple maintenance had been avoided or building materials (like insulation for crawl spaces) was stolen.
