Hey all....long time reader, first time poster...

My street was cleaned the first night of the operation, no real complaints about the service. They started around 7pm that night, so there were a fair number of cars on the street that they had to go around.

One vehicle has been on the street and hasn't moved since the snow fell...I don't know how it hasn't been towed. It's been ticketed a number of times, they even stopped putting the tickets under the wiper blades as there is more than a foot of snow on the top of the thing! So, they put the ticket on the side mirror and hold it on with an elastic band.

The city still has plows and graders and and front end loaders and dump trucks etc... I have no clue how many companies there are out there but I suspect there might be a few that would be available to step in.

I really wonder what job this guy had before they elected President of CUPE. Was he the guy driving the tractor that cuts grass in the summer?? He makes outrageous statements with absolutely no basis of fact or reason. Whoever claimed that safe and clean roads was the private sector's mandate? Does he not understand how the private sector operates? Does he not understand the idea of contracting out?

This is just pure 100% union rhetoric. Mr Davidson, you look after the interests of your membership, and let someone run the City, cause it would be a scary day if anyone actually listened to the crap you're sputing.

Welcome JT. I see cars that seem abandoned all over the place. I suspect the cars won't start and the owners can't afford to get them fixed. There should be a limit on how long they are allowed to stay on the streets. Perhaps if a complaint was registered?

My wife is more annoyed with the parked truck...so I'm letting her phone it in! Smile

Does anyone watch "Parking Wars" and should Winnipeg consider harsher tactics for parking enforcement (especially in winter time) such as what Philadelphia uses? (Is this a good question for a new thread?)

If I were to voice one annoyance with the snow removal, it would be with my own crappy timing. I ran out after the street was cleared, and unblocked my sidewalk entrance from the street. And I had used my snow blower to blow the snow from the sidewalk along the front of my house the day before. When I got home the next day, the sidewalk clearing crew had re-filled my sidewalk entrance...oh well.

Actually, a parking wars thread would be desirable. And yes I've seen that program.

It's pretty unrealistic, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to call after they have cleaned your street, and let them know that the vehicle that was impeding their cleaning the night before, has now moved. So, maybe if they hurry, they could return and scrape down what's left so it doesn't linger around for the rest of the winter (or until the next major clearing operation)

Dare to dream... Cool

If a car isn't insured and is parked on city property, shouldn't it get confiscated?

One more funny story before I get back to work...

A few blocks away, some dude parks his car lengthwise on the sidewalk beside his business (I'm guessing it's his, because the extension cord going to his block heater is plugged in to his shop) and as I was walking home, the sidewalk cleaning guy was trying to decide what to do next.

He had already come all the way down the sidewalk from the previous block, and had a full load of snow in front of him and was now blocked. If he decides to back up, he has to go a full block in reverse. He can't go forward because of the car, and he can't make a new path to the side and go onto the street because the road crew from the night previous, dumped a huge pile of snow on the corner, because of the car that was parked on the sidewalk...

I checked it out the next day, and it looks like he backed up all the way and went somewhere else. The car was back in it's spot on the sidewalk, plugged in, and the area around him was nicely shoveled...

The truck on my street (been parked there since the snow flew) has plates on it, so I'm guessing that it's legit to be parked or they would have towed it.

Probably comes down to by-laws regarding the amount of time your allowed to be parked on a public street. Which is why it's been given so many tickets.

The question now is, at what point does a vehicle get towed...

As long as it's insured, they'll leave it.
