so apparently.. it makes sense to build a stadium when the economy is tanking because its a development the governement would love to be part of, that fits very well with what they already intended to do.
Same goes for the HRM.

since they are projecting big defecits due alot to less taxes.. and more needing to be spent on EI...how would we be sitting if instead of the Liberals raiding the EI 50+ Billion surplus to make things look better under their watch... what if instead the money was simply banked?

How well would that 50 Billion help us now to springboard the economy forward by training all the people about to be layed off?

Plumbers, dry-wallers, electricians, pipe-fitters, etc. The trades that will be in dire straights when they begin retiring in record numbers. Those trades are in great demand now. Five years from now? Wow. Without a great influx construction costs will escalate.

A downturn in the economy is a great time to create daycares. Make daycares part of infrastructure (why not, if rights museums qualify?) and boost economies in neighborhoods and cities. Get people into construction trades training programs and build, build, build. At the end, you'll end up with something that we actually need.

ugg thats been my mantra for 3 years now.. they are sort of listening.

And pavolo... daycares = hand up.. not a hand out. Are we saying free daycares? No... but free training for daycare speicialists.. initial free or partially subsidized day care while you are training or just starting work.. and the most important part.. an actual spot in a licensed day care ( which are apparently worth their weight in gold )

Well aware of the system Dean just not totally in agreement with baby sitting of which people pay not the lions share of the cost, or as some say state childrearing .

But it seems like a reasonable compromise. Create more daycare spots so those chronically under-employed or unemployed can get (better) jobs and improve their lot in life.

I'd rather pay for 6 years of daycare than a lifetime of welfare.

If you are talking about people being laid off from their jobs, they will be eligible for the "re-training" programmes offered by EI. As for the daycare training, more young people would be interested in this profession if it were valued by the government and the not for profits by paying these providers a decent wage. Until the wages of an entry level daycare provider in an outside facility honour them as they should be I don't see the spaces increasing because the government can't increase spaces if there aren't the people to offset the ratio. I agree with GOM, I'd rather pay for the daycare than the welfare but let's pay the providers what they deserve first.

I disagree that we need legislation to increase the pay of dy care workers. They want more... demand more... dont get it.. quit.

And so that we can eliminate the statement.. I cant work/take training because I have to take care of my kids... oo guess what... Daycare spot just one block from your home... get off your ass NOW!

Kind of tought to do in uncertain economic times isn't it? Most people would rather have some sort of income rather than gamble on finding something better, especially when the future is less than rosy. Much easier to negotiate better wages as a group for daycare workers than on a case by case basis especially when they'll probably hear "if you don't like it quit" when they demand more.

they THEY need to do it as a group. Not have ME and the rest of Canada/Manitoba feel sorry for them and legislate it.
Its THIER CHOICE..

What we need to focus on is getting rid of welfare. If i was about to loose my job the last thing i would want is to pay taxes to support the chronically unemployed. If they want their money make them work for it.

Like said in other posts in this thread, people who get laid off can get re-training for other jobs through EI.

A few facts!

1)There is no $54,000,000,000 surplus from EI in anyone's account! The government spent it from the general revenue account!
2) Harper doesn't believe in daycare- he turfed the Liberal plan to create spaces, and opted to give $100 per month per child under 6 years old.

3) Anyone who wants to cancel social assisstance is too mean spirited to be on this Forum, and is banished!

4) Anyone want to get a stimulus package going , should get some money into the hands of the poor people, who will spend it immediately on food, clothing, shelter , booze and drugs, not necessarily in that order, but they will spend it and get the economy working.
I left out cigarettes, because there are a lot of cheap stolen cigarettes in the local market as of now.
If anyone has any available, please let me know as my wife smokes over a carton per week and I could use some cheap ones!!
