Other than our friend SMJ, any World Cup fan(atics) out there?

As an aside, the MLCC has elected to not relax liquor laws allowing soccer fans to drink in licensed establishments before 9am.

Is that really a big deal? And, alternatively, should the government even dictate when we can drink?

Not sure if you noticed, but the government is the one who pays for policing. Much easier to have stricter liquor laws then to increase police staffing.

Solution? Anyone who wants to be open outside of X hours must have certified response staff.

Ummmm, actually you and I pay for policing.

So, if I was interesting in tying one on, at 6:30am, and I could not do so at a sports bar whilst watching a soccer game, mayhaps I'd do so at a friends place. Would the police dynamic change much under those circumstances?

Most of the establishments that the hard core fanatics will go to are going to be the "closed" members only "clubs" and because it is members only, the alcohol will flow freely. The Portugese "clubs" on Sargent, the Italian "clubs" on Corydon, there are the few African nation "clubs" in the city as well as a couple of "clubs" where the German fanatics will gather. This is just to name a few. All of the ones that I have been to as either a member or guest of a member don't really have a turn off or on time for when the alcohol can flow. It is the public bars and lounges like CanadInns' Tavern United or the Kings Head English Pub that are restricted to when they can serve alcohol. They will be open at 6:00 AM for games that are scheduled for the early time slots but they will not be serving alcohol (legally) before 11:00 AM.

Canada needs to host a World Cup so we can watch and drink at a decent time of the day... and have a team in the finals. World Cup Soccer 315348

I dont think there is enough beer in the world that would enable our team to make it to the finals... or does home team get an automatic buy into the finals?

I get that. But what would fundamentally change that would create an extra burden on the polices?

more people at most public events... more people that dont generally know the other people there.

Whereas in a private house likely only friends... less chance of an event..

Into the tourney, not into the final.

The "tournament" is the "World Cup Finals" if you want to get technical. The World Cup actually starts roughly 3 years before you get to the tournament finals with 32 teams left. The final match of the finals which determines the winner is a different matter.

So after this Finals only 1 more year to go till it all starts again World Cup Soccer Icon_biggrin

We were at the Prater, in Vienna, back in 1990. Glanced up at a TV in a bar, and there was a game on. Ha, look, Italy is winning 2-0. Uhm. I looked around, and everyone was staring at me and my gal. Italy was beating AUSTRIA, 2-0...

My wife would probably like it though.

Then, you gotta calculate when the bosses are at home watching the games...
(Germany for example...).
(Or was it already mentioned with the Portuguese construction workers...?).

I know I am going to be late for work tomorrow morning so I don't miss any of the live action fromt he Germany game. And I may leave early to catch the England game depending on how heavy my work load is.

No surprise for anyone who has ever worked for any of the heavy construction companies in the city. The Portuguese love their football. Good on them for putting their love of the game before work. Most of the owners know nothing will get done for those 2-3 hours anyways even if they were to force the guys to come in to work, so why pay them for that time. Better to just let them go watch. Everyone is happier that way.

I have NEVER missed my team playing in a World Cup or Euro because of work lol. Somethings are definitely worth burning sick time and or vacation time. In 1998 I even almost had to figure out a way to reshedule my WEDDING, due to the posibility of my team potentially making the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time ever. Had it worked out that way I knew for a fact that none of the males invited (my self, and my dad included) would have wanted to be at a wedding ceremony at the time lol.Needless to say my wife was not impressed, and luckily for my marriage (unluckily for my team grrr) the conflict didn't end up happening.

Canadian's really need to learn to prioritize better lol.

Oh, and man Argentina look GREAT on attack. Hope their defence doesn't do them in cause they are playing some beautifull football up front.

Are you saying your team didn't make the playoffs? or you didn't go through with the wedding? Wink
