One of the comments following the written article was that American coaches are teaching rough play as a take off of North American style football, to make up for a lack of skill. While I agree with that to some extent, keep in mind that this is a physical game and there is contact. Elbows, and a little pushing is all part of it. Hair pulling goes too far.

One of the things that does bother me, is the use of instant replay. Properly organized games have a referee and 2 assistant referees, and it is their job to control the game. I don't believe in the instant replay with the intent of disputing referees calls. That only serves to continue to discourage referees, delay the game and make for a lot of armchair coaches. The best call a referee can make is "Play on".

FOOTBALL is called "The beautiful game" for a reason, this type of behavior should be severely penalized. Let's not let N.American coaches start turning FOOTBALL into hockey.

I don't think anyone can argue that this is boorish behaviour, but it should only be penalized if seen and called by one of the game officials.

Some of what they caught on tape is deplorable but not all of it. I have played football for most of my 40+ years and have seen some bad play but this does take the cake in the hair pulling incident. However what is being shown is not in sequence of actions so I would question how this escalated? If the punch to the back was the first incident, it was a retaliation incident to an elbow to the stomach (neither of which were warranted nor were they warned). I would also be looking at the ability of the officials, both on field and side lines because some of what happened had to have been seen as the play was occurring right along with the fouls. IMO, the officials should also be suspended for not doing their job in carding her. There are 4 officials at any game, 3 on field and one that is considered to be a liason between the 2 benches and also keeps official time. How could 4 officials be that blind???????????

Secondly, North America will no more turn this into hockey then any other country would.

Thirdly please don't include contempt into the notion that soccer will turn into hockey. Soccer will never be as exciting a sport as hockey.

Wanna show contempt? Maybe look at how the fans behave at soccer games around the world.

You don't have to look around the world, just catch a youth soccer game around here some time.

Has anyone watched these clips closely? In the first segment, why is there no indignation about the BYU player giving the elbow to the chest of the NMU player? Of about the BYU player pulling on the shorts of # 15? I'm not advocating retaliation, but anyone who has played any sport knows that you don't put your hand up and call the referree, but stand your ground and make sure the opposition knows you're not about to take any crap?
