Exactly. And thinking that isn't restricted to getting re-elected but rather doing the right thing regardless!!!

And not necessarily getting caught up in numbers.....we need look no further than our present situation with our ancient water and sewer system. I believe thirty years ago the city was warned that retrofitting and replacement initiatives ahd to be udnertaken.....or else....well, we are at the "or else" scenario and it is getting more expensive by the hour.

People, the voters espeically, btiched and whinged about the costs all those years ago.....no one at the time had the forethought or cojones to say look people, short term costs equal long term gains.

I have been reading the latest Nat Geo issue about water and was shocked to see just how many billions of gallons are wasted due to aging infrastructure world wide.....

I offer up the previous statements if anythign to back up my assertion that assertiveness and forethought are badly needed in this town.

how exactly is water wasted?

Please be specific because I hear the comment of reducing water usage all the time and have yet to be able to figure out how water can be wasted.

Water isn't wasted, money is wasted actually. Drinking water is usually treated and moved to user mechanically, and when flushed, is again treated and moved mechanically.

Water is wasted via leaks in aqueducts, leaks in urban piping systems.....even something as simple as replacing that one washer in a household tap can alleviate waste issues. Remember, it is you who ultimately pays in the end regarding "leaks" and such.

I mention the latest Nat Geo issue simply because I found many of the numbers astounding to say the least with regards to how infrastructure repair or updating aqueducts can alleviate the waste of a resource that we are going to see become affected in our lifetime using glacial melt as an example.

But how is WATER actually wasted?

If I turn on my garden hose and leave it on, the water eventually either makes its way to the storm drain to makes its way to the river, or it evaporates goes into the air and comes back as rain somewhere else.

How is water wasted?

In arid regions evaporation of water does not come back as rain. Too damned hot and dry. It will be interesting this summer to see what happens rain-wise.

What I am commenting to in previous posts is the need for infrastructure repair on a large scale to this city's water and sewage pipe system. This issue was addressed thirty years ago in this town and still very little has been done about it.

no actually it does come back as rain, eventually. Maybe not there, but somewhere else.

Jubilee Overpass to open Sunday

The Jubilee Overpass is set to open after five months of repairs.

Earlier this week, the project manager for the city said further delays would likely keep the busy overpass, which connects Pembina Highway to Jubilee Avenue, from opening until Oct. 9.

But on Friday, the city issued a press release stating the bridge and all roadways linked to it will re-open to traffic in the afternoon of Oct 3. Riverside Drive will also re-open that same day.

The $8.5 million rehabilitation project, which began May 2, was undertaken to enhance safety and repair deterioration to the 41-year-old structure. The work is expected to extend its lifespan by up to 50 years.

Work included removing the top surface of the original deck and installing a new concrete deck overlay. Pier bearings were replaced and a new concrete safety guard rail was erected.

As well, the roadway was realigned east of the overpass deck, where it now splits into two left turn lanes that empty onto eastbound Jubilee Avenue.

Yeah, I heard that. Seems like these contractors did not learn the lesson the perimeter overpass taught.

Holy hell. This city is mired in some bizarre politics. I really don't get how schizoid the priorities are w/ infrastructure and progress. At all.
