What effect will this have on traffic?

The Jubilee overpass at Pembina Highway will close for about four
months beginning next weekend.

The City of Winnipeg announced Friday that the overpass and its
approach and exit ramps will close for repairs May 2 and will remain
closed until sometime in September.

The city said at least one lane of Jubilee Avenue and two lanes of
Pembina Highway will remain open during construction.

The $8.5-million project will see the overpass decking reconstructed,
the bridge supports repaired and modified, and the approach and exit
ramps resurfaced. The bridge railings and concrete median will also be
replaced.

The existing structure is 41 years old.

Another question: will anything have to be done to this bridge or surrounding roads to accommodate the new BRT line? If so, should that work be done at the same time?

What effect will this have? I think we all know the answer to that one...it's gonna be a disaster

"at least 2 lanes of Pembina Highway will remain open" ? Is that 2 lanes in eash direction or 1 lane N.bound and 1 lane S.bound? Leaving 2 lanes in each direction will create a bad enough traffic jam at rush hour, if the only leave 2 lanes total...then oh my Jubilee overpass to close Affraid ! You'll have a back up past Bishop Grandin in the mornings and up to Confusion Corner in the evenings.

It's gonna suck trying to get home with the second possible scenerio.

long overdue....but man, that's already a huge choke point around rush hour...

I don't envy those who have to take that route....

...then again, I'll have to deal with the Disraeli closing this fall....and that's for a lot longer than 4 months!

sorry...they say it's not closing anymore..sorta...maybe...well they'll try.

I bet it's still closes at some point....

Good thing this city has an abundance of north/south routes to handle the overflow!

The Disraeli will indeed be closed at one point. The way I understand it will be built is along-side the existing structure with no closings until the very end when they combine the two new roadways. And that closure is expected to be over a weekend.

Keep your fingers crossed!

That's a good question....and one that planners probably overlooked, or are just going to ignore till later.

Logically it would make sense to make the necessary modifications/adjustments during a window such as this.
I doubt anyone budgeted for that anyway... lol

WTF? We're gonna have a single leg of BRT.. that's it? Oh and a LRT study....that nobody will do anything with, like the last LRT study...

So one day, maybe, we'll have a LRT system (lets assume that it's installed in phases...and we decide to go thrugh with the entire thing, start to finish...I know it's ambitious and totally not plausable unless you call it a stadium and all, but stick with me here...) and that's in addition to the begun, but never fully completed single leg of the BRT system...? Why not suspend the construction of the single leg BRT until the LRT study is done?

This issue alone can make it so that Judy has a serious chance of winning the election,

which of course will cause a fairly significant increase in property taxes, followed by a huge exodus to bedroom communities.

No.
This city is firmly entrenched in the past.

What is wrong with laying out the infrastructure for BRT, and converting to LRT if/when it comes to that?

someone will say it (the BRT infrastructure) wasn't designed for that, blah, blah, blah...and it will cost $XxX millions of dollars to re-convert to LRT infrastructure.

It's a perpetual money spending (re: wasting) machine.

Is it really difficult to put tracks on top of a concrete roadway?

21Jubilee overpass to close Empty Re: Jubilee overpass to close Wed Apr 28, 2010 12:00 pm

Depends on how the roadway was constructed...if it wasn't constructed to support the weight of track plus train (probably more than one train car for a LRT...so multiply that by...pick a number of cars...)

Most times we just pack down the gumbo, dump some crushed limestone, pack that down and then pour a concrete pad...or slather some asphalt down like a layer of butter.

So yeah...it depends!

I understood the BRT infrastructure has been designed with LRT conversion in mind. Read that somewhere...

It would be nice if for a change, proper forethought was employed? Long-term thinking is something sorely missing in this city.

Exactly. And thinking that isn't restricted to getting re-elected but rather doing the right thing regardless!!!
