I don't know many young families that have their home paid for and no car payments etc. Great for you that your able to do so, most people are not in your situation. My priorities are exactly the same as yours, but not everyone is in the same boat financially to begin with. I'm guessing somewhere along the line you had a significant financial boost to be able to be mortgage free at a young age(maybe some help financially at some point?). Kudo's to you.

I guess "decent" depends on one's own personal situation at any given time.
Or maybe they just chose not to "keep up with the Jones". Smile

Kids and family are the most important things in one's life, as far as I am concerned
When my wife and I were working we had good enough cash flow to be able to manage what was important to us.
My question was just to try and get a handle on todays costs, as opposed to my $575 a month starting salary and my wife's $525 per month salary, back in 1968.

Looks like the answerr your looking for is.....it depends. Personally I found your $4k/month to be fairly reasonable but a little on the low side which is why I suggested something like $5-6k/month....but I guess the real answer is there are too many variables. All depends on ones finances, their needs and wants and thier expectations.

I have to agree with some of what Goth says, it all depends on what your situation is. Being that our children are grown now our financial demands are not taxed as they once were so we are able to have some excess cash to use as we wish, take vacations on a whim or purchase something because we want to. Having said that, we also choose not to live in the poshest area of the city, we choose to drive economical vehicles and I also choose to cycle in the spring/summer/fall season to save money. Our personal choices in how we manage our finances are very different from a lot of other people because we both grew up in very financially tight situations and have also experienced very low income as a married couple with young children. I think a decent wage in Manitoba is what you personally want to make of it and how you perceive it to be. I still believe in the old saying that money does not buy happiness.
