WINNIPEG — Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg have agreed to settle a lawsuit over the botched investigation into an off-duty police officer who killed a mother of three in a car crash — a case that made headlines across the country. The province and city will pay $300,000 in an agreement reached with the family of Crystal Taman, who was killed four years ago.
Why was the city involved in this lawsuit? Whatever the reason, this is a reasonable settlement. I doubt Harvey-Zenk has anything to lose in a settlement. What about Bakema? East St. Paul Police? Who else is culpable? Minuk? Does he fall under the province?

I still want to know what happened to all the cops in the north end division that claimed to have very bad memories.

The Chief said he was going to get to the bottom of that nonsense, but is quite silent it seems.

We deserve better, and frankly, the Tamans deserve a hellava lot more money imho.

From what I have heard 2 have left the force on their own .

People like the chief count on us peeps to forget. Maybe with the help of forums such as this we don't allow the chief to forget.

Other than a convenient memory shortage the Winnipeg Police are not culpable IMO. The issue me thinks is the death itself.

It was considered as a retirement and not needing public broadcast .

Well, there were a number of issues that arose, and not the least of which seemed to be the all-round conduct of the police. Other than that, the death appeared to be just another traffic accident..I don't mean to sound harsh by saying that, but it is true imho.
It became all about the police covering-up and lying.

Yes it was and the trial has gone down and it is time to move on .

I would have liked to see a newspaper article telling that one of the cops that had a bad memory resigned from the force.

It's all about accountability.

Hardly time to move on. GOM is right eh...some want to forget perhaps?

True, JTF. If that what the suit was about then the Winnipeg Police should be culpable. Perhaps the cop that hosted the party as well. There have been such suits won against party hosts.

Oops, forgot. There is NO evidence that Harvey-Zenk was drunk. Me bad.

No, to me. WPS would have been much better served to publicly acknowledge that the forgetful few in this case have left the service. Its about public confidence. I have always believed that the Royal Navy was right. Nothing like a good public flogging now and then to keep everyone in line.

Moving on does not mean forget what happened.

If the family is satisfied with $300,000, and the money certainly was not the issue, then thank goodness for the family, and the best wishes to them!
Losing a loved one cannot be put into a monetary valuation!
This has got to do with closure and moving on with life!
What the lawyers earn hasn't much to do with this crappy situation. Lawyers are entitled to be paid!

personally thought that 300k was a little low, but i guess its better then nothing..
i just read about this on the Black Rod Blog... Now thats a blog that redefines the word "rant".

Rosen it is right it is closure and 2 of 4 are still on the force . And privacy laws prevent them from telling you who retires if the person requests . If they are let go for a discipline matter that is public record , and the only real case they will tell you about .
And there is no reason for names JTF as I have been told by forum do not get personal ! Where is the grumpy when you need him , Razz
