The province has released the Taman enquiry. Looks like Bakema and Graham may face criminal charges after all. Most significant is that the RCMP have taken over management of the ESP police and it will become an RCMP detachment by year end.

Excellent news! Bakema for sure. Which one is Graham? I don't know why any of our small towns need their own police force.

He was the original/first ESP cop that attended tha scene. Bakema, the Chief, came after and kinda' took over. As I recollect.

They should overturn Zenk's conviction and re-try him. Put him in jail for a while. Don't need to be a long time, just enough to send others a message. Cop's also need to toe the line.

If only that were possible. Our justice system is profoundly inflexible in these matters me thinks. Maybe for all the right reasons. But I'd sure like that dude to spend a few months behind bars.

Actually there is a way to do it. There was a letter published in the sun a while ago by a retired lawyer, and in that letter he said that it was possible to appeal that judges decision, and that in his opinion they should. I cant remember what else he said, I wish I had kept it.

Indeed. The entire police force in Ste Anne (three officers) has just quit over a case of interference from the towns police commision. The RCMP are taking over untill a new force can be recruted. Why Ste Anne needs it's own force is beyond me. They only cover the village (1800 residents) and not the surrounding RM. So why bother?

Hi Time Lord.. nice to see you.

St. Anne has 3 cops.. Morden has about that and they have 5k people. I agree with you guys, let the RCMP police the area, save some of the town's taxes for roads. They need repair.

The towns pay for the RCMP sometimes more then their own and responses times can be slower . This trial will take place but getting charges will be hard if the memory lapses continue and me is betting they do.
Even if they get a conviction this a show trial to show that Chomiak is tough and still hasn't learned to dress himself . Sad that he is now paying attention to his job in justice . This is a way for all the wrong people to wipe their ass of the blame .

The inquiry seems to have more than enough sh1t to go around for everyone. ESP police, Minuk, the judge, WPS, nobody left out. What a catastrophic failure of the entire justice system!!

But you know what...it doesn't bring Crystal Taman back does it?

Well, coming from a small town (gimli, mb) im not sure what having a police presence i the town means anything at all. In gimli, there are approximately 5 rcmp cars, + an rcmp truck. So there are probbaly around 10 officers in the town.
All that force and they still could't save a young boy's life after being beaten badly at icelandic festival.
I know i know..what coudl they do it happened so fast, i just had to vent because there was a LOT of crime in the interlake this summer...

Police dont prevent crimes.
They deal with the aftereffect and/or committ the crimes. ( the later way less often then the former )

Hmm..i guess i could say that having a police presence in a city should deter people from committing crimes... but that's not always true either... if it was our jails would be empty...

Municipalities pay for RCMP coverage, so as to why they might want their own police, could be in part an economic decision. In the case of Gimli for example, I would imagine that the Mounties responsibility extend beyond the town and into the surrounding area. A municipality would certainly have more control over their own police vs RCMP. In the case of East St Paul, it looks like that may not have worked out too well afterall.

There are many RM's and towns who have their own police.

In a small force of 5 , 6, 7... officers, the value of having their own force must be nebulous at best. By contracting with the RCMP they get huge economies of scale. Hiring, vacation and sick relief, buying equipment such as cars and radio and tasers and pepper spray and uniforms... I can't see how or why a small municipality would want to deal with those things.

from the sun...re the ESP police being disbanded.

"Michael Wasylin, East St. Paul's deputy mayor, said he was "astounded" by the decision yesterday, adding local residents "won't want any part of this new system."

"There was no consultation, discussion or courtesy whatsoever," he said, citing a November 2007 RCMP review that concluded East St. Paul cops provided a good overall service, highlighting strong response times and high levels of police visibility.
"

and the real fun statement of

""Part of the reason people move to this community is to get better policing," she said. "

A first class constable in the RCMP makes over $75K plus overtime...a heck of a lot more than a constable from ESP, or Victoria Beach, etc. Big difference in costs I believe, that's why places opt for their own force.

do the people in ESP do drugs?

http://www.winnipegsun.com/News/Manitoba/2008/10/08/7011331-sun.html

"We've been bombarded by residents who have overwhelmingly stated they prefer to keep the East St. Paul police force intact," he said.

Morris said he believes East St. Paul is unfairly bearing the brunt of the Taman report's fallout.
"

UNFAIRLY bearing the brunt? How much more of a Screw you could he say to the Taman family.
