I remember reading that, either the State or the city, had a policy whereby tax money couldn't go towards a private business.

I cannot find any reference to such. Anybody?

Found it.
As it's illegal for municipal governments to subsidize private businesses, spending $20 million to keep the Coyotes in town for a year is unacceptable, said Goldwater attorney Carrie Ann Sitren.

When the jets departed Winnipeg, was it the Conservatives in power, who wouldn't buy the franchise for $50 million.
That was when CJOB's Peter Warren got into a convertible car and drove up and down Portage Avenue, trying to find the money.
Why weren't there any rich kids in town willing to take over a losing money franchise?
The Jets team owners had a raw , no future chance, because they did not have the income from the food, etc and the arena wasn't good enough to provide the increases in payroll that were coming. The Jets payroll was amere $16 million at that time- and was way too much for those skaters. lol

Heck, even Dean could play in goal, even with his pants down, even while cleaning out the leaves from the eavesgoalmouthtrough.
Go Jets Go!
At least there ain't no CBS owned radio station in Winnipeg that would black out audio coverage of Jets games. NHL Rumours... The NHL is returning to Winnipeg - Page 19 Icon_smile

For anyone looking for more info on the subject, I found the FreeP's website setup for this to have the most up to date, and factual info on it...thus far...

They even have a live weblog and video re-broadcast from the Glendale meeting this evening:

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/breakingnews/ice-edge-out-true-north-silent-93393149.html

Oh, and CBC says the NHL has a contingency schedule that contains a team in Winnipeg:

There's a live chat session going on at the Free Press' website, and shortly the live video from Glendale will begin.

John White from the Freep said something interesting about expanding the MTS Centre, "Chipman says they cannot and will not add seats."

He also said that we would likely lose a few seats by adding more camera spots.

From what I have been reading the COG should vote 6-1 in favor of funding the losses for another year. But apparently that doesn't mean much and the team could still end up here anyway.

Not looking too good for us, looks like the vote will be 7-0. Daly is addressing council and talking about how the NHL is committed to finding a buyer and staying Phoenix.

Can you imagine our city council agreeing to spend that much money in one year to keep the team? Holy moly batman!...

what i didn't get from that council meeting was the difference between their definition of a 'tax' and a 'fee'.

apparently the fans are going to pay a 'fee' to make up the 20 million, but doesnt that simply translate to higher ticket prices? If fans aren't coming out for tickets at 5 bucks, what happens after they levy that 20 million onto the tickets?

Deank

Maybe it will be a fee on all tickets like our entertainment tax?

I understand the "fee" will be a supplement on homeowners and businesses in the area. Not sure how that will manifest itself.

When they raised money for the Fargo Dome I believe they introduced a sales tax (.5%) until the money was raised.

This is far from over.

Now comes the court challenge from Goldwater.

...I think the guy who's supposed to "make the deal" is supposed to do that first, before the Goldwater guys file suit...

The fellow who's supposed to make the deal was interviewed the other day in a paper saying he was working WITH the Goldwater group to make sure that this proposal satisfied them....

....so who knows.

Our best shot right now, sadly, is with the Goldwater guys filing suit against this whole thing... NHL Rumours... The NHL is returning to Winnipeg - Page 19 Icon_eek

Yeah, and you can't expect all the other 29 teams to lose games just to keep the Coyotes above .500... (attendance incentive)

I'll bet the Meese attract about 50% greater attendance.
