me for one. and I imagine many other people have a similar question.. .what do other countries do? Democracy aint a new concept, there has to be other models out there that we can base our government on without starting out brand new.

Are there any other democratic countries without a senate? If so, what are they so I can see the model and see if I agree.

One thing deank. Canada is not a Democracy. It is an oligarchy, you vote your MP but the party chooses the PM. Therfore we have an Oligarchy or an elected dictatorship.

Personally I'd like to see Canada dump the "monarchist parliamentary" system and make the move to a Republic.

I dunno about that opinion but suffice to say they, the capital L Liberals, dropped the ball big time when that particularly contentious tax was not dropped as promised.

What is insane is that the Liberals dodging of their election-time pledge to "get rid of the much-hated GST" had little or no repercussion. That just made me angry. I'm not sure I've ever admitted this before but I voted for JC in 1993 for taking this position/pledge. Maybe his opposition at the time should have pledged $1,000,000 to each breathing person as well as a free trip to the Moon?

So did I and many others......vote for him that is......I had the opportunity at the time to cover JC's northern hustings with one of his proteges, Rodney Spence, who it was discovered later was another one of corrupt Rez Chiefs.....oh the stories one could tell about Chretien's tenure when he was a minister of INAC....lots of the usual gladhanding.....

Perhaps those who wish for me to disclose certain nuggets would best be reminded that I have a long tenure myself and never forget the political chicanery that has gone down in this province on ALL levels and from ALL parties.....another big-assed circle jerk if you ask me.

Much in the political system/electoral process needs to be changed. MP's that don't speak for/represent their constituents in favour of the party line should be turfed. That mechanism is coming.

The Liberal Government would have been crazy to drop the GST (cashcow). The previous Government of Mulroney and their GST and FreeTrade led to one of Canada's most prosperous periods. The biggest accomplishment from any Liberal government was a socialization of Canada. Personally I'd take prosperity, it puts food on my Table and skates on my kids feet.

I believe what many Canadians don't know about the GST was it replaced a few HIDDEN taxes. Many of which were a real b1tch to administer from a business POV.

If we are going to be taxed I want to SEE the tax.

I remember having this conversation with my Dad and yes GOM you are right. My Dad dealt with Mulroney, Chretian etc etc as my Dad was quite involved in Federal Politics so I am privy to alot of insider info regarding federal politics.

A quote of myself, in RED where I say "the biggest accomplishment from any Liberal government was the socialization of CANADA" I am saying that that is the Liberals biggest accomplishment, I am not saying that I like it. Socialization is the only thing Liberals are good at, just look at our revolving door justice system.

The conservatives biggest accomplishment was giving Canada the tools to pay off its debt, which the Liberals just spent making a bigger bureaucracy.

I am sorry Miz Point, if you were unable to understand the meaning of what I was saying. I will try to use bigger words to stimulate your vastly superior intellect.

Huh? The GST replaced the 11% Manufacturers tax. We were led to believe it would be cheaper for us. Yeah right - kind of like how we see the savings when oil/gas drops. And so on. This is a tax across the board and it is a cow - the other was a calf. At least the NDP in Manitoba had the sense to reject the HST.

Anyhow, Parliament has been prorogued. Hope they all enjoy their winter break. We'll see them back at it in March.

Should be interesting, things will be different in the senate. Government bills passed in the House should pass in the senate. YAY

The difference, Miz P, is I did not use big dazzling words that could be misconstrued.

Remember, I am but an ignorant man, according to you. And dont forget, it was you that said you were an expert at reading between the lines not I.

I somehow think an election hinges around Iggy and not so much Harper. Harper is getting his stuff done I thought and Iggy's poll numbers are so low, it would be suicide for him to vote down the government.

This is a good thing. Maybe now the games will end. Until the Liberals get back in power. Sigh.

Prediction: Iggy goes all silly over this "partisan" action...

This is why the Liberals have been getting their Media buddies to make a big deal about harper's prorogue. Liberal strategists knew this would happen that is why they reved up the election machine last year, they did not expect the backlash they got from the public.

Now when parliament gets back to work in march, the Senate will be have a conservative majority and will have a majority in senate committees. Any bill that passes in house will get passed in the senate. Now the NDP, Bloc, and liberals have no choice but to vote against bills in the commons. No more BS of making themselves look good by voting for a bill only to have their senators block it in the senate.

Now we will see what happens. When Harper gets his non-confidence vote and calls an election, we will find out what the will of Toronto and Quebec are. Will he get a majoriy? If he does, I wonder how he goes about reforming the senate or will the Liberal spin doctors be right?

The damn media is again at fault even mentioning the prorogue. Parliament is continually prorogued as a normal way of doing business.
Trudeau did it 11 times, Cretian 4 and now harper twice. What is the big deal? None!
Complaints on the GST? Someone called it a cash cow! That is a lot of manure! the GST cleaned up and made it easier for manufacturer's to export goods. That was positive. The GST at 7% kept actual prices lower. I was manufacturing then so my $100 cost carpet sold to Eaton's and retailed at $200, that included the 11% hidden manufacturing tax became $89 plus GST and the retailer sold it for 178 x 1.07= 190
Jean Cretian claims that he never promised to cancel the GST, but look for a better alternative, which he couldn't find.
Harper was the idiot who cut 2% and gave up approximately $11 Billion in revenues, at a time when the 1% reductions meant absolutely nothing to any one.

Jean Cretian, is a liar. He said "if I get elected, I will get rid of da GST." I did not realize that statement was in french and meant something else. To me getting rid of something is getting rid of it, not looking to replace it with another tax, only to keep it because it was an efficient cash cow.

If The Liberal party porogued, and the Conservatives said something about it. The liberals would just fool everyone by saying something about the conservatives hidden agenda.

My friends and I find it funny that Iggy and his clown factory are making a big fuss. Even funnier is how they have the sheep believing that democracy has been hurt by this.
