After sitting through some of this trial the other day, and getting close to tears several times. I have already formed my own opinion of the parents , if that is what they are .
This is one of the most horrific failures of adults again loosely used , I have heard of And I have seen more then the average person . This child was a excuse to collect money and a problem after that . wonder how some of you feel., if following it . Lets try not to let race enter this please as it is just as possible for anyone to do this.

It will be impossible to extract race. While bad parenting is endemic it seems that in Manitoba bad parenting is almost a cultural thing. It is generation after generation after generation of poor judgment, followed by alcohol-fueled judgment, followed by systemic failure...

I will say it again...if we built more community centres and had more social programs in place this wouldn't have happened. Rolling Eyes After all, the parents are NEVER to blame.

My mom was at jury selection last week for this trial, lucky for her she was not selected as I don't think she would have been able to handle seeing the evidence presented.

On a side note, she found it rather disturbing that the defense attorney's for all 3 cases that were undergoing jury selecion dismissed EVERY single potential juror that was not Aboriginal. Seems to be this implies that all non-Aboriginals must be racist or something.....?

I thought a jury was supposed to be composed of a representative segment of society, not chosen by race.

Also, may that poor child rest in peace....as a parent of 2 girls myself it brings tears to my eyes just hearing some of the evidence that has come forth so far. I just can't come close to grasping how anyone can do this to a child and still be considered human.

Looks to me that true evil exists in all races.

Did the background of the people play a role ? I'm sure it did.

Was it because of race ? Of course not.

Will anything really come of this ? I doubt it.

I'm sure that woman will be pregnant again and keep having more...I have a friend who works at the Remand Centre and told me that she showed zero remorse and was making phone calls and laughing about what happened. She sounds lovely!

WTF? Seriously if that's true I can't think of a better candidate for euthanasia.

It's true. My friend said he felt ill listening to her talk and laugh about what happened. Pure fricken evil. I'm sure she'll hardly do any time in prison, her lawyers will bring up how bad her childhood was and that'll be her excuse for torturing her child. Sick and twisted world we live in...

Lot's of talk on the blogosphere and in the MSM. I suspect she will be sentenced to the max. BUT... She'll get triple time for time served.

No they can't because the phone calls the inmates make are also to lawyers.

They can, but they need a court order to do it.

Would the testimony of a guard who overheard the comments being made be admissable in court?

Nope wouldn't that be considered hearsay?

I don't know, that's why I'm asking out of curiosity. I know that police officer's can testify in regards to statements made while in custody or during questioning, so I was wondering if the same type of situation applied to prison guards.

Seems kind of stupid that if a guard at the Remand Center hears inmate bragging about their crimes that their testimony is inadmissable. I'm sure the inmates must love this fact.

No, I don't think it is considered hearsay. They plant peeps in cells all the time hoping the bad guy brags about his crimes. Those plants then testify about what they heard. I think it is only considered hearsay if the person quoted is not present in court to testify. Perhaps someone here with a criminal background (heh heh) can clear this up for us.

Better yet hung from the neck and dangled alive for a few hours.

Did I say that out loud?

Hearsay is any evidence that is offered by a witness of which they do not have direct knowledge but, rather, their testimony is based on what others have said to them.
"She told me that he said....." for example.

Better yet hanged, drawn and quartered....but that was only reserved for high treason and for males. Unfortunately, I think no punishment is severe enough for the acts committed.

The sick bastards are a waste of air , yes hearsay is admissible up to the judge to rule it so . Can be tough to get depending who hears it and where . Snitches are not as good as once was for this. Courts have looked down on them since earlier problems.

This is what the accused will say in her defence. (please note she has not said this, this is what I think she would say)

I am a victim of the system, my parents were not there for me and I was abused. I am also a product of being poor and my partner beat me regularly. I should not go to jail, but i should be in a traditional healing circle as is the ways of my people before the white man came and took it all away. In ending, this is all the fault of British and french colonialists in the 16 and 17th centuries. It is because of them that I ended up this way.

And you know what. some Left Wing nutbar judge will sentence her to a few years, with double time for time served. she will be out on statutory release in 2 years.

If I was the Judge, my sentence for both of them would be Death by hanging.
